Has anyone tried a good auto stereo amp for power, say, for a small mixer centered rack unit, to drive speaker cabinets? Somehow this makes sense in one way or another.

James, You would need a 12 volt power supply as big as Texas to operate a mobile 12v amp of any size.
For example, a 100 watt 13.8 volt amplifier would need a 10amp,minimum, power supply. Preferably 15-20 amps to prevent distortion.
A power supply of that size is rather expensive and heavy. A switching power supply is lighter in weight but expensive.
