I have four Peavey amps and have noticed that experimenting with non-stock speakers
don't seem to give as good resultes as with other brands of amps. In the two Bandits, 1-
transtube 1 1989 , i have tried; EVMS. JBL,
ALTEC 4178H, and have discovered that it is an exercise in futility. They just don't work that well with other (quality) spkrs.
The '65 D/R really shines with the other spkrs, but i've given up on trying to upgrade the sound of Bandits with non-stock speakers. Have any of you experienced this
same thing is is it just me? TJH |

what were the stock speakers in the Bandits, were they better or worse? I tried the speaker exchange (EVM) on another small amp and got the same results as you, it was a small and light Carvin, but just sold it and use a LTD with a BW for small and big jobs, I found that once you get use to a good tone like a Session 400 LTD most other amps just won't do it |

Jim, i think the amps only sound good with the stock speakers. Apparently Peavey designs the guitar series of amps to work only at their peak with the original spkrs.
I love my N1000 and liked the N400 i had before and the Bandits are fine for guitar
(six string) with their stock speakers. The
circuitry just doesn't fit the extended range of a quality speaker, not to say that Peavey doesn't use quality speakers, just that the guitar amps don't react well with other speakers. The Sheffield series works fine in all the the amps. TJH |

Might this be a testimonial for the Black Widow speakers. I stuck a 15 BW (even with the aluminum disk cut out after it cracked) in a PV Deuce, replacing 2 Eminence 12" speakers.... made the amp actually useable... This might be the one thing keeping me from getting a Fender SK, loves my Black Widows! Only speakers that have ever come close (including Altecs and JBLs)for me were a pair of 12" EV SROs, which were stuck in an old '70 Standel.
Of course, all in my humble opinion. Beauty is in the eye of the ear holder... or something like that(:>)

I've had good luck using Eminence and JBL speakers in Peavey amps. But by the same token, the Peavey Black Widows in other amps have really improved them. Just this weekend, I replaced the stock Eminence 12" speaker in an Evans JE150 with a 1202-4 Black Widow. Man that amp came alive, it sounds much better.

To my ear, the absolute best sounding speaker all around is JBL. Currently have two EVM 12L's one JBLE-130 and one Altec 12
inch. Over the past 52 years of playing, i
think the most satisfying sound was with a 1965 Twin/R loaded with an Altec 4188H abd my Gretsch guitar. I seem to notice that the top amp makers seem to favor JBL and used them until the cost bacame prohibitive
Unfortunately no JBL EVM, Altec are being made any more so we have to make do with what is available. Black Widows have always performed just fine for me, But i don't think the highs are as clean as the JBL
just my two cents worth, to each his own. TJH |
