Topic: Best speaker for Steel & Six-String |

I'm trying to modify a combo amp for use with both Steel & six-string (rock & country).
Is there a 12" or 15" speaker that sounds GREAT with both steel and six string electric guitar? Must be able to handle 100-150W power amp.

JBL K-120 or D-120 with a K cone. Or a Peavey Black Widow 12". Or a Peavey Scorpion.

Thanks Brad. Have to say that I don't love the Scorps with Steel, although they are exceellent for rock.
Which exact model of the BW 12 are you recommending? Peavey has a bunch of them. |

Once again I will receive the customary Forum ridicule that is heaped upon me when this topic comes up.
I can tell you what speaker not to use:
A Peavey 1501-4.
This is not impregnated with Kevlar, as other Peavey speakers are.
The 1501-4 was designed specifically for steel guitar.

ridicule? never my friend..but i'm a little confused richard...as always..what's the noticable difference? i played my 6 string through my peavey Sessions all the time. They sounded ok to me. Also somewhere in this section of the Forum, i have a picture of my studio with my 2 Nashville115 cabs in it..most guitar players that have played through them, love'em?????

| Tom, the Heritage with the Blue Marvel and Scorpion sounded good at the gig, broke up a bit on the 10, 8, 6, string combo down low, but sounded full otherwise, I may try the other Heritage with the two BW's if I play a gig with the stage near the loading door |

IMHO, one of Peavey's all-time best products is the BW 1501-4. Simply a great speaker.
But for a 12", gotta go with an EVM 12L. I've got one in my DeLuxe Reverb, sounds huge. |

| Tom, it was on high power, BTW, the amp has a very good mid and shift control and dialing in a good sound is a snap, I use it differnt than most other guys, I pick about 12-1300 Hertz and then boost it about 75% (3 oclock), but you can scoop it at 800 Hertz and get near a Twin sound. When you got the Svetlana tubes, was there a sticker with a number on the box like 25 or around there? |

The problem with the BW or JBL speakers with playing rock and roll is that when you are playing with a tube amp that is really being pushed, there's something about the aluminum voice coils that makes them sound a bit harsh. (IMHO). It doesn't matter whether you are playing 6 string or steel, distortion + JBL is problematic. One speaker that I have used that has a good smooth sound for steel is the Celestion Century (it's also hella light). But it doesn't have that JBL edge that sounds so good for clean steel playing (or guitar playing for that matter).
What I do is I mix up speaker types. I have a JBL type and also a Celestion speaker in the same cab. For me this gives the best of both worlds. Actually it sounds better than using two JBLs or 2 Celestions for any kind of music. (IMHO)
My current fave which has been for the last 3 years or so is a THD 2X12" cab with a K-120 (16 ohm) and a Celestion Century (also 16 ohm). My next fav is a THD cab with 2X10" THD speakers (similar to Celestion) with a JBL E-120. They sound fat but sparkly, but are also smooth when driven.

You can check out Eminence Deltalite 12" and
15" speakers as well. They can handle 300 watts
and weigh alot less because of the neodymium
magnets. I stuck a 15" (2515) in this rig I
made up awhile back. Great for steel & guitar.

Hey Jim - Check the power rating of your Blue Marvel. You may be experiencing speaker overload. RE: Tube Numbers - I bought 3 different matched pairs with the numbers 17, 22, and 27. I think the numbers correspond with plate current which is related to the unique breakup curve of each matched pair.
