Anybody using a Vintone Fender Super Twin for steel... or a Mesa Lonestar? Any 65 Twin Reverb users? Pros and cons of these three? |

Rick.. what is a "vintone" Super Twin??.. I imagine you meant "vintage".. I don't have it anymore, but I used a Super Twin w 2 JBL's for over 20 years! It was a GREAT steel amp. The best I ever used, hands down. The sound was fat, warm ,juicy, smooth, bright... REAL nice!
The 65 Twin Re issue is probably a sweet steel amp if you don't need massive solid state power. I think too many guys here are hung up on earth shattering wattage. There are lots of players here that use 2-200 watt Peaveys..for what??..
Lots of guys here like Fender amps for steel and some[like me]will use nothing else. Any 100 watt all tube Fender amp with a good 15'is a great sounding steel amp/ bob[This message was edited by Bob Carlucci on 10 February 2005 at 06:38 AM.] |

I bought an early silver face Twin Reverb with JBL speakers in 1967 that I still have and love to play through.
Just recently I ordered, and received, a 1965 reissue Custom Twin Reverb with the 15" speaker in it. I haven't had a chance to put it through its paces yet but am hoping for good results.

Rick, I use a Super Twin Reverb in a head cabinet with one or two 15" speakers. I've tried lots, but it is the only amp for me. Until someone makes a 300 watt Fender style tube amphead, a Super Twin is the best amp ever made for steel. I also use a Dual Showman Reverb for quieter gigs. Nothing beats Fender tubes for steel. |

If I was in the market for an amp, I would seriously be looking at that Twin that Ken Fox has for sale.
Ooops, sale pending...
D'oh!

When I was doing road work in late 60's and 70's I was playing through a Fender Dual Showman with two JBL 15's and a Fender Twin with two JBL 12's jacked together and got an awesome sound on both E9 and C6 in fact most of the playing was on C6 because of the type of group I was playing with. But these amps were prior CBS amps bought in the early 60's. |

Thanks, Mark. Looks like it is sold. I am a hopeless retoration nut! Looking into a 1966 Twin this morning that needs to be done. As soon as I sell a few I will search up some more to do.
One of the best I did in a while was 1967 Head only. Put it in a perfect reproduction cab, by my friend Pat Conners, with a 15" EVM15-L. Man that was an awesome steel amp!!!
Keep i n mind any early SIlverface can be converted to a Blackface circuit. Just a handfull of resistors and it is back to that sweet sixties sound. I do not blackface the reverb, as the Silverface circuits sounds great. There was some lousy reverb in some of the later Dual Showman R and Twin Reverb amps(very thin, no low end due to the lack of a cathode bypass cap on the reverb drive tube), easily converted back to an early Silverface reverb circuit.
