I'm installing a Bill Lawrence LXR16 pickup.
There is a black wire and a white wire.
Does it matter which connects to the tip.
thanks,
Tom

In electronics, the black wire is always ground, or negative. This is just the opposite of house electrical wiring, where the white is negative.

So, what happens to the tone if the pickup is connected to the jack incorrectly? Does it still work? Will the sound be different?

I wired mine like a house until I was advised otherwise.
It sounds exactly the same either way.

It really only matters if the pickup has one side tied to a shield. In any case the shield MUST go to the ground side of the jack.

White goes to the tip on Lawrence pickups.

You have to wire it like a house if you're in a house band.

Switching the black with the white will switch the phasing on a pickup, which pretty much only matters when you have two pickups via a 3 way switch. So if you wired black to hot and white to ground it would be out of phase with the other pickup, which sometimes sounds pretty good, and other times sounds awful. Good luck

Reversing the wiring leads, reverses the magnetic field direction. No sound difference unless another pickup is involved and then you would get frequency cancellation and a tinny nasal sound... bob

Actually- if you reverse the leads everything you play comes out backwards-and, if you listen real closely, you'll hear "Paul is dead".....
