Listening to Jay McDonald playing his Fender 1000 on the album "Buck Owens On The Bandstand", his tone on some of the songs sounds muted? Am I out to lunch or what?

Those guitars actually had a string mute on them that was activated by moving a lever. Maybe Jay was using it? I never saw much use for the mute, but, maybe someone else can chime in.

I would say that he was palm blocking, along with some pick blocking. I used to have a Fender 2000 and the mute on it was about as useful as the Tailpiece cover on a Telecaster was.
