Hi. I'm getting ready to have a couple of JBL, D 130 F speakers reconed. I am told by Evans Amps and a couple of others that it's better to have the voice coils wired to 8 ohm's verses 4. They say that John Hughey himself uses nothing but 8 ohm speakers when he has them reworked. I am putting these speakers into Evans FET 500's which came with 4 ohm Eminence speakers as a standard.
I would think that 8 ohms would cut the power back pretty bad as I believe the amps are rated at 250 watts out at 2 ohms.
Does anyone have any thoughts on this.
Thanks

Hi Ray,
For one thing, JBL no longer makes a 4 ohm cone for the D130 and K130 speakers. If you use one of the 8 ohm speakers in the amp you will be getting half the electrical power out of the amp as with the Eminence 4 ohm speaker but you should be easily as loud due to the increased effiency and lower distortion of the JBL.
If you hook up both of the 8 ohm speakers you will be geting the same power as the 4 ohm speaker but you will be moving a lot more air. All you should need.
The alternative is to get a side-market 4 ohm cone that "fits" the D series basket and take your chances with it.
Good luck, tell us how it turns out...dg |

I just had a JBL k130 reconed by George Elliott. A great job with a quick turn around. To my ears it sounds like it did before the re-cone. His tel # is 702-255-7701. His address is 2900 S. Valley View, Las Vegas NV 89102. |

I have two favorites. Woody Woodell in TN does a great job. I have a reconed D130f that he did and it's great. The other is Ted Weber at Weber VST. He has a recone kit that he doesn't advertise. He has a custom order of cones that are nearly identical to the original D130 paper-edged cones. All the new cones that JBL supplies are the much thicker paper E130 cones with a cloth edge. If you want a very true to the original D130 recone, I don't know of anyone anywhere who can get this close unless they have true original JBL D kits. I haven't seen one of those in years. Ted can also put a 4 ohm or an 8 ohm voice coil on these D130 cones. I've got one in my Twin and after a couple of months of break-in, it's great. It sounds a lot sweeter and warmer than the heavy E130 kits that we see so often these days. If you want Ted to make you one of these, you have to ask him personally as it's not on his website.
