Inspired by another nomination for "Man of the Year," and not meaning to slight any of the many wonderful contributions of others too numerous to mention, but feeling that someone in particular deserves a little year-end celebration, I am going to nominate Brad Sarno and his Black Box as (respectively) "Engineer of the Year" and "Device of the Year."
I can't enumerate all of the others who have taught us all so much here during the past year, except to point out that several who have been around longer are already overdue for similar recognition (examples would have to include Keith Hilton for "Device" and several of our greatest sages, including at least Ken Fox and Donny Hinson, for "Engineer" accolades).
However, although I'm sure he would not claim to have "invented" anything, with the Black Box Brad has combined a purity of purpose, a simplicity of function and an elegance of execution to produce something that few who have tried it would ever after want to play without. Period! How could more be said?
Even if he were not such a good guy, this could not go unrecognized. As it happens, he is a great guy, and deserves
every success. |

The more I play and examine the mechanical system in my Excel Superb, the more I appreciate the pedal steel design genius of Mitsuo Fugii. He has developed a number of innovative features which contribute sigificantly to the playability and sound of his steels.

Edited to say that I just realized this thread is under the "Electronics" heading. Sorry for sliding out of the thread's intent -- but my observations still hold.

Aw shucks fellas. You're too kind. I'm humbled and sincerely happy that the Black Box does for people what I had hoped it would. I just love the sound of tubes. In my mind, the Black Box invented itself. It was an obvious necessity.
I'd also like to jump in there with Jim and mention Mike Brown and his work at Peavey to help develop that sweet little Nashville 112 amp. I got me one a couple of weeks ago and couldn't be happier. I'm still trying to figure out why that little thing sounds so good. I've also got my Wallace True-Tone pickup which really is as good as they get. And, of course, I've had my Hilton pedal for a few years now. Talk about a great contribution to the steel world. Thanks Keith! As far as the Promat guitar goes, well I haven't seen nor heard one yet, but being a push/pull junkie myself, my hat is off to them as well.
Happy New Year!
