I'd like to try one in front of the Black Box to see how the tube likes it.

I've had one of those for over a year. I bought it as a guitar boost, but it's lowest setting was too much of a volume jump. I started using it as a steel preamp and I think it sounds real good. Not a really clean sound but a very pleasant, subtle and smooth distortion. Kind of like Ben Kieth's sound on some of Neil Young's early stuff.
I tried out what I think was a black box one time and I would say that it has a similar sound. Probably less versatile though.

Pete. I can't see it as much use before a BB,
as a tone control after maybe, but still not so usefull.

Unless you don't like your pick up and want to change it's resonance.

Read : a 1 band tone control with fixed Q

David, i want to try it out in front of the BB to make that tube WEEP loudly and openly in public!
edit: I also have a Fender Champ amp that I want to tonally FRY the front end on!

I was looking at the "Turn the knob to dial in pure, flat-EQ gain, ranging from 6dB, all the way to an astonishing 25dB!" factor.

I'll probably pick one up this weekend and run it up the flagpole.
I'll let you know if I'm "astonished".

Hey Pete. I haven't tried it, but I keep eyein' it at Guitar Center. If it has that kind of gain, it may be a real cool way to overdrive the Black Box. Let me know what you hear. Keep in mind that putting it before the BB will prevent the pickup from interacting with the tube and will make the transistor in the "driver" the first active stage. There are no rules, just whatever sounds cool. The treble dips that it provides may also prove to be cool.
