Can anyone recomend a "stompbox" type distortion unit that I can place in line without it changing the tone of my steel when its bypassed? So far the few Ive tried all change the straight tone of my steel, except for my old Steeldriver II that I really dont care for tone wise. Any suggestions? Thanks!

I like the Fulltone. I'm pretty sure it's a true bypass.

Actually, you can buy the Fulltone switch from www.tubesandmore.com and install it in just about any button-type pedal to make it true-bypass. Most boutique pedals these days use a true-bypass switch.

Larry,

I've got a Voodoo Labs Sparkledrive $119 that was modded by Robert Keeley $54. It is not only a great distortion unit w/true bypass but also will layer distortion with a clean sound or function as a very transparent clean boost. I highly recommend Keeley's products!!!

Hey Thomas. The Sparkledrive is my #1 box. I've considered sending it to Keeley for a while now but I've been procrastinating. I guess my biggest complaint is that it loses a bunch of bottom, typical of Tube Screamer type pedals. Supposedly Keeley's mod addresses this. What sez you?

Hey Jon,
Keeley's mod is a definite improvement in terms of the gain on this box. It is like night and day. The bottom end is also improved though it still does not match what you had before you turned it on. I do not use this unit with steel guitar. But it makes my little Traynor 15 watt EL84 amp breathe fire with my 62 tele RI and Les Paul!

Cool. I gotta make this Keeley thing happen. And then I'll make sure the Kidde extinguisher has a full charge.
