I would certainly give it a try! You could set the clean channel up for steel and the 2 OD channels (drive & more drive) up for guitar. The steel may overdrive the clean channel, so set its channel gain low. It should handle the E9th tuning ok.
I once used a Princeton 65 (that's a 65 watt guitar amp of similar design without DSP) with steel and got lots of praise for its tone.
On the Stage - For a clean guitar tone without using the clean channel, use the yellow (drive channel). Set its gain low and master high. When you set the gain higher, you will get more distortion at playing peaks (this may or may not be desirable to you when you play guitar). Set more drive (red) to whatever you like, distortion-wise.
Also note that you can mate an 8 ohm cabinet to it should you need more power. Its rated at 160W with two 8 ohm speakers in parallel.
There was a head version of the Stage out at one time. I always thought it and a collection of speaker cabinets may be the way to go for easy giggin'.
