Do you guys and gals remember Red Ingles ?
I recall he turned out a crazy record of "Temptation" featuring one Cinderella Q. Stump, (aka Jo Stafford)....now then, does anyone have a clue as to who the steel guitarist was on that old recording ? My guess would be Speedy West.
Jo Stafford ... one of my all-time favorites!
What beautiful tone & drop-dead perfect intonation. She had such control of her intonation that she could effortlessly sing flat & sharp on purpose for great comic effect on her "Jonathan & Darlene" records with Paul Weston. Funny stuff. I listen to her American Folk songs CD every Thanksgiving Day. Shenandoah makes me cry every time. She's a good model for phrasing a melody on lap steel. How many people know that rock guitarist Santanna listened heavily to Dionne Warwick for phrasing!?

| Ah yes, old auntie Cinderella...she could yodel the bark off a maple tree! Actually there is no relation but Jo Stafford must have had one huge sense of humor! The steel player on the Red Ingle cuts is my favorite player of all time...none other than the "Dean of the Steel Guitar" himself....Mr.Noel Boggs. |

 ...only old guys like Andy and Eric and myself remember those "good ole days"
George when you reach the age of 50 you will understand a little better,,,,
Eric,,,if Noel was your "idol" move over guy
he was mine as well. No one had a sound like

I figured it was Noel...the "touch" gave him away. As for Darlene and Jonathon, I have their recordings and they are absolute gems! How Jo and Paul kept a straight face while doing them is anyone's guess.
NOEL BOGGS: I may have related this before, if so, forgive an old phart like me. Back in the fifties, he blew into town with Hank Thompson. I phoned him at the hotel and found out he had a free evening. I invited him over a home cooked meal. He accepted eagerly as he'd been on the road for over a week of lousy meals. I had just bought my new Custom triple. He and I jammed all evening! What a great guy he was. So sad when he passed on at such a young age.

| While we're on the subject of Red Ingle and his fellow conspirators, does anyone know who played steel on Spike Jones sessions, particularly Hawaiian War Chant? Someone should be brought to justice for the final bars of that song! |

Ian...I loved those last few measures of the War Chant by Spike....It was cleverly done, don't you agree ? (ha!)
I'm a Spike Jones fan and fanatic...loved everything he did. There will never be another quite like him.
Jody...You know what I remember most about my jamming with Noel ? It was his beautiful rendition of "Tenderly". He put a high string in the bass section of one of my necks on the triple and what a nice sound! He showed me the tuning, I used it for a very short time, later changed my strings and for the life of me, I can no longer recall exactly how he tuned it. (That was some 40 years ago!) Maybe you might recall his tuning. I doubt I'd ever use it as I am comfortable with what I am using now. Just curious, that's all. |

| I wonder if that Dick Morgan was the guitar player with Alvino Rey? He use to tune it up for him and get the Steel Ready for him to play.I saw him do that before the band came on....al |
