Our band is considering upgrading to a new PA system. What Power amps, speakers, etc., for a quality sound would be the best bang for the buck. Portability is an issue also.

Any advice is appreciated.

DITTO.............
We are useing 16 pieces of "Peavey" gear and if "Peavey" made mics,we would use them too. Haven't had a bit of trouble with any of it for many, many years. (Lead guitar player broke a jack on the Mixer-board. Was a snap to re-place it tho.)

Depends on your $budget and how big/small a system you need. For a "traveling" system, consider a Mackie 808-S. That's 8 channels with plenty of adjustment, dual power amps (mains and monitor, or right and left, 600 watts each at 2 ohm load), dual EQ's, effects, etc. Or the 808-M head -- same w/o stereo. Two Mackie C300 un-powered speakers, up on tripod stands. Monitors of your choice on the floor. Powered or un-powered sub-woofer if you need 'em and they fit into the budget. Have used this setup for "weekend" warrior duty for 4-5 years without any breakdowns or letdowns.

I'll second Mr Schubert on the Mackie suggestion. We have a nearly identical system and love it. For portability, it's amazing to me how they have packaged two power amps, 8 channel mixer, digital effects and two eq's in a single unit that you can easily carry with one hand. Used to be you'd need to schlep a full rack of gear to do what the Mackie 808 does. Affordable and great sounding.

Or a Mackie CFX series mixer with built in effects sending the signal to Mackie's line of powered speakers. The 450 speakers can also be used as monitors. Great sound and handy as a pocket on a shirt! Peavey also makes very good equipment, including microphones, but for PA I'll take the Mackie. (No offense Mike Brown).

I would check out the stuff from Mackie. I heard one of their new small self-powered speaker systems a couple weeks ago and it totally blew me away....

Len , my r&b band plays clubs around St. Louis, we use a PV 200 x2oo xr 600g amp, very reliable, very light weight, with sp5 speakers, total cost,$1100. For outdoors I bring a Carvin head and subs to mike the instruments. We do not mike any instruments in the clubs, there is no need. The key to the PV stuff is the ddt compression, allowing you to get maximum bang from those 2oo watts. BTW, I use 1 channel mains, 1 monitors. hope this helps, JimP
