I am playing in a church with terrible acoustics on stage but we seem to sound OK out front I double on guitar and have considered going to a pod running direct and using ear monitors which I think would work fine I have a powered monitor with a house mix in it and double on keyboard and since we dont have a sound man I love being able to hear just where I am in the mix. It is just hard for me to bring myself to run my steel direct who is doing it and what are you or they using thanks

I have played direct at my church for about 3 or 4 years. I use a Digitech 2112 preamp / effects unit, then go into a Countryman direct box for a mic level output. I use Shure in-ear monitors with my monitor mix coming from the front of house board, which my Son runs. He has a good feel for what I want to hear and checks it occasionally with his headphones. When I play guitar, acoustic or electric, I just use a different patch on my 2112 but otherwise the same setup. I use an Audio Technica UHF wireless when I need to move away from my equipment. I couldn't find a rack like I wanted so I built my own. It has two inputs on one end and an XLR out, a 1/4" out, and the power cable connector on the other. It also has 1" tall rubber feet on the bottom with a vent panel to let air circulate. The 2112 gets pretty hot. When I switch to guitar, I just zero the output of the 2112 and move the plug on my "mini patch bay" to the connection I need. BTW, this case matches my Rollins Pack a Seat.

We have a separate monitor mixer for the wedges on stage, but the monitor "engineer" doesn't have a very good feel for proper monitor mixing. "Cut" is not in his vocabulary only "Boost".

Here's a couple more pictures of the rack case.

Jeff,

I have been using a POD XT for almost 2 years now for everything. I have run it live direct, live into the power amp in on several amps, and direct in the studio. For me, I found the unit clean enough, with enough headroom, low noise floor, and great sounding effects. As far as running direct - you just have to get used to not moving air from your amp on stage. That is really all that is missing.

I saw in another post where you ask about the VOX Tonelab. I have only tried it in the msuic store with a regular guitar. I've heard good things about it - it is built like a tank, but don't have enough experience with it to comment.

By the way, Line 6 just lowered street prices on the XT - $299. Just an FYI...

Good luck choosing,

Roland GP-100 gives a great, full direct sound. Buddy loved his. Also has 2 sets of output so you can go direct and to your amp(s).
