OK. Guys
I got the 705's mounted on my Carter but they are sitting too high even screwed down all the way (Not even 2 quarters) The problem I think is that the plate is sitting on the pickup wire because the hole for the George L is in the middle and the 705 is on the end. I really didn't want to drill a new hole if I didn't have too. How far should the strings be from the 705's? The George L's were 1/4" from the PU to the top of the string.
Should I remove the springs and the metal plate that sits on the springs?
thx

go ahead and remove the springs and put alittle small lite weight form under the pick up and be sure to save the parts you took out for future use if needed frank |

Frank
What do you mean by a small light weight form?
Is the metal plate necessary for shielding?
thx

Bob, I'm sure he means foam. It will take the place of the springs and compress more for better clearance.. It's just a typo. |

I had a pickup with a bottom plate that forced the wire to run under the plate to get to the body hole and limited the depth adjustment. In other words it sounds like it was exactly the same problem. I machined out a semi-circular shape from the side of the pickup and plate to provide clearance from the body hole. Now the pickup is pretty much bottomed out in the cavity and is where I want it. Wish there was a body route there to accomodate this issue. |

This has been on the forum before and they all seemed to agree that the proper distance is 3/16ths of an inch. |

I'm sure the Lawrence L–710 spacing between the P/U and string is 3/16”, but; I am also (pretty-sure) the proper spacing for the Bar-Magnet P/U is (2)-Quarters! [The same as for Geo. L's]

Tim Harr,
Are you out there? You're the only one I know with Carter/705's
Right now, I'm about 1 to 1 1/2 quarters. Is that a problem? (Too close) Sounds great in the Digitech Gen3.

Here's why you want exposed pole/blade magnets at least 3/16" away from strings. Is if they are closer than that...then they will accually hinder the natural movement of the string when picked(of course too little for the eye to see..ha); and will hinder the amount of sustain that is possible for that guitar and possibly give a harsher delivery/signal to the amp. But of course, if you can't hear this..than it don't matter; just keep on keepin' on....but that is what happens and of course the george L has a covering over the magnet...as why they go closer; because of the thickness of the covering.
Have fun.
