Almost all of the downloadable tones for the POD 2 have some degree of distortion. How do you get clean, pretty steel tones out of this thing?

Hi Bob
buy the XT version and you will be a happy camper.... I allways had problem with the 2 and went back to the Profex.... but the XT is a other story, easy to set and.... for me, it's sounds more "nature" then any of this ampsimulators! I heard about that update with a 15" speaker simulator.... I'm looking for [This message was edited by Andy Zahnd on 02 July 2004 at 11:43 PM.] |

Hook it up to a computer and use the editing software. Make sure there is no distortion or overdrive used.
Most of the downloads are from guitarists.
I've had little problem getting many clean tones this way. |

B0b,
Try keeping your 'drive' knobby at no higher that 9:00 o'clock. You can make up the gain with the output knob.
I use the blackface and/or tweed amp setting, a little reverb, and that does the trick

I'm using the Line6 Edit software on my Mac, and I have a few good tones. I'm just wondering about specific settings that other people are using for steel. The Blackface amp model sounds best, I think. What others work well? Which cabinet settings are best for steel?
I'd like to get a nice, wet Hughey sound. How should I set the delay and reverb?

b0b. I use the Tweed Bassman amp model, a 2 12 speaker model, with cavernous reverb about 10 o'clock, and a delay set at about 30% repeat strength, one repeat and about 355ms delay. Some use up to 500ms as I believe was mentioned in previous posts. Of course that's on an xt.
The blackface seemed too tinny.

I agree with Eric. There are a couple of 2x12 cabs, and they all sound different. In addition there is a big difference if you use an SM57 microphone on-axis or off-axis.
Then there are the tone controls. PODxt, I'm afraid... |

Hi Bobby, I have used a Pod 2.0 and a Pod Pro (same thing sound wise) and have gotten great results. I will extract some settings soon and post them. I too, have moved up to the Pod xt and Pod xt Pro. Good stuff again.
Gary Morse used to have some sounds posted on the line6 website, but I don't know if they are there anymore.
Later, Dave |

I am getting interested in obtaining a PodXT, and have been watching this forum and reading everybody's comments about them for a while now.
What about forming a sub-forum of the Electronics section, that deals strictly with settings and edits for Line6 Pods and Profex-like devices? I don't mean "how do I change the battery" or "how do I use a Roland RAM card," but real meat and potatoes downloadable steel guitar patches, firmware update info and settings.

There's no support for sub-forums in this version of UBB. |

bOb, I have been using the Blackface setting (V2.0) with output volume all the way up and the gain at no more than 9 o'clock. I still have some headroom issues, depending on the room or sound system, but if your amp is up high, the distortion on the gain is negligable. Also, try bypassing the cabinet imulation. I'm having good results with P2, so now I'm eyeballing the XT. |

On the POD 2.0 I find the '64 Deluxe and the JC 120 best suited for steel. The Deluxe has more headroom than the Twin model and sounds much more "in-your-face". The JC 120 is the quietest.
Presently, I'm experimenting with the PODxt. You can do a lot more with it, but it also takes a lot longer to create a usable sound. The POD 2.0 is more like an amp, the XT more like a multi-FX. And yes, the Twin model is a lot better on the XT.
Both are a great match for the Variax, but I'm still looking for a really convincing steel patch.

I have the 2.0, and it seems more than capable. Seeing as how I just got it, I don't feel any need to "upgrade".
As I understand it, the cabinet emulation is disabled when you throw the A.I.R. switch to "amp" mode. It's only used in "direct" mode, or when the headphone jack is in use.
Anyone use the "POD Clean" amp model?

Bob, if you want I could probably burn you a PROM of version 2.3 and send it to you with the Boogie cabinet. It will give you more headroom, which should hopefully make more of the amp models usable for pedal steel. |
