Does anyone have any tips for cleaning the grit out of these old tub style tuner pans? The inside of the pan is not very accessible for cleaning. The arrangement of "tuning pegs" makes for tight quarters.
Also... can you suggest any cleaning solutions that work well on these? Metal polish will put a shine on it, but I'd like to use a cleaning agent first.
I can't stand that ring around the tub!

Doug, I took the pans off the guitar and pulled the tuners off. If you do it that way you can clean the pans and tuner shafts, the whole works. The tuners are just set in from the outside of the pan and they should just slip right out when you get the pan off the guitar. It worked for me. |

Grit adds to the guitar. Ever see Claptons
strat??.
The other post is correct the tuning strips
slip right out of the tray when you remove
them,,,,you can even see who cut that body, look under the tray on the neck furthest from you,,,date and Initials of the worker who did that will tell you..
If the initials are FT or LF,,,,you won the
lottery..if they say JC,,,,you lost
I did some "cuttin" up in my days in Fullerton,,,you betcha, |

Before I "discovered" the easy (and proper) way of removing the pans, I would use Q tips and folded (length wise) paper towels with Noxon that I would slip underneath the shafts and pull through. It was messy and tedius but it worked.
Hey Jody, when I removed the tuning pans from my '62 T8 Stringmaster, it said "Rose."
Did you know Rose? I always wondered why you made frequent trips out to Ca. [This message was edited by HowardR on 14 January 2002 at 11:12 AM.] |

On my old Fender 400 I used to use Pipe Cleaners for both cleaning and as part of the polishing process.
Afterwards to keep the dust from accumulating, try a spray can of Dust-Off (compressed) gas. I use it for the key heads of my steel. This product is used more with computers for monitor screens, keyboards etc. |

Thanks to everyone for the tips. The date under the pan is 12-11-51.
Jody, the initials appear to be TF, or T, something! There's also a D stamped in there. What was her name.... Delores? Darlene?
It's a Deluxe 6, walnut finish, with a beat up tweed case. I bought it locally yesterday, and the price was right because... there is no pickup (the trapazoid top and the magnets are there however). I'm guessing that the pickup was probably removed by some guitar player who was looking for a "vintage Fender" pickup for his Telly. The seller was a guitarist who pointed out that the instrument has "Telly knobs" and "Telly pots" and a "Telly jack" and that it could be "parted out" for good money!

George
I thought I told you to keep quiet. The "G" string was wound,,,really rough on the fingers, I like smooth round as I get older
Back to business,,,Doug,,looking through the
Fender Finder book I have,,I apologize. The names I posted were people who were there after your guitar was made.
This is all I could find. A gal by the name of "Taeni Faleni" & another gal by the name of Teresa Fontana,,sorry bout that.
There was only one Dolores and as for "Rose" well you couldn't miss her,,,,")") ever see a
sixteen wheeler with a skirt"?? Im sorry thats not nice,,but she probably has done the
Slim Fast trip by now.
When people would ask where the Fender plant was,,,they would say ,,,take a right on Harbor and make a left at Rose,,,and you are there.
Hey George,,,look under your pan,,,I tell you who "did" it..
Will the Real TF please stand up....Oh here comes Howard again,,,,,the trouble maker.
Doug ,,,You Wont Part With Your Either,,,your Fender I mean,,,keep the pan it comes in handy " I Know...
