Topic: Which Power Amp to Use with Mesa Boogie Pre |

Will soon be getting a Mesa Boogie Studio Rack Mount Pre Amp, just wondering which power amp and effects you would recommend to go with it. Tube? Solid State? Brand? I would like to have about 300W per channel, so I am talking a "hossy" system here. What would you use?

| I use a Hafler P3000 power amp and a Lexicon MPX100 effects box with my MB Studio Pre. The Hafler is a really great sounding power amp. Real nice open sound. |

| I heard the guy in Kansas (ten+ years ago) who used a Peavey tube power amp that sounded like a million bucks. Doesn't boogie make a tube power amp? |

IMHO the biggest, baddest power amp out there is the VHT 2/90/2. It's 'only' 90 watts a side, but it's tube powered with a pair of KT88 tubes per side. I can't imagine anybody having to play louder than that sucker.
My second favorite is the big MossValve transistor amp (500?) which puts out something like 300 watts a side. |

For clean sounds and rich glassy tone, I am a fan of the VHT 2/90/2. More headroom than anyone could want, from two pairs of KT88s. Fan cooled in two rack spaces, two power levels.

Bruce Bouton uses the smaller mossvalve amp in his boogie rig, Mike Johnson uses the Mossvalve 1500 as does Paul Franklin. Paul also told me that when he was out with Dire Straits his back up rack had a carver power amp in it. He said to his ears those were the two best sounding amps to use with that particular preamp.

Whew!!! Thanks guys for all the replies. Wish I could try each of these suggestions, but I know that is not going to happen. Nevertheless, I appreciate all your suggestions and will try to make an intelligent decision!!

I have used the VHT 2-90-2 extensively. It is quite the power amp. While it is expensive, I don't feel it is overpriced. Basically, it is a handwired, boutique type amp that has no corners cut in design or manufacturing. It is heavy. I would not hesitate to buy it again.

I use a Mesa/Boogie 50/50. Very clean and powerful. I put it in a separate 2-space rack, though, because it's so heavy.
My preamp is the V-Twin, not the Studio, but the 50/50 works well with any amp.
When it comes to the final tone, get speakers that you really like. Everything else can be perfect, but you'll never be happy if your speakers have too much twang or honk.
