I have a very early 68 (ab763) Super Reverb amp that has 4 mojotone (P10r) 10" speakers in it.

I notice that the bass control does not add a ton of bass to the amp. I am not getting quite enough bottom (or fullness) out of the amp that I would like. (Im use to 12's)

I have heard that the P10r's (alnico) are more crunchy and bright compared to the CTS (ceramic) speakers. Should I change them out?

I have thought about the combination of 2 and 2 but we mic our amps. Which speaker would you mic? Also if I put 2 and 2 do I split them top and bottom, or put them in one on top, one on bottom....etc..

Thanks,

Joe

I am also looking for a empty Bandmaster reverb (head)cabinet, and an empty bassman cabinet (head) on the cheap.

I have three Supers. I can tell you for sure alnicos are not brighter, they are more middy. Are you 100 percent sure the speakers are in phase? I found one out of phase on mine and it was killing the amp for power and bottom!

I did not wire them, but I will check!

Thanks,

I have a hard time telling which direction the speakers move using a 9 volt battery I now use the battery from my Dewalt drill. Just a momentary touch only, otherwise you can rurn the coils up.

I took a look at the wiring. The are all wired the same direction ( red on left and black on right) and are daisy chained together in parellel. So unless the manufacture of these P10R's screwed up with the wires coming from the coil, I'm guessing they are in phase with each other.

Do your super reverbs have a lot of bottom to them?

The 65 Pro Reverb I have gives a much fuller fatter tone. I switch to the super to cut through the mix, but the bottom end is suffering.

I used a Super for a few years on guitar in the early 70's. It never had much for bottom end. The Pro Reverb has a 12" speaker and would most likely be a tad warmer.

Maybe go stereo and use both of them!

Thanks Ernie. The 1965 Pro does not see the light of day or dark of night anymore. It is in dead mint condtion and has never had any maintence. (it may need it?, but the collectors would frown and at some point I will sell it to a collector)

I may change the Super to 2x12's or a 15 and a 10 or something if I can't get it right with just the 10's.

The real kicker is, everyone who hears the super comments on my tone. People really freak to here the tone of a good fender amp and a decent player. I always have players come up and ask how I get the tone. But I hear it a little different.

All my Supers have plenty of bottom. More than I could get with a Single 15" speaker in a 40 watt Fender amp/ Weak power tubes and Chinese preamp tubes can rob bottom end. I get a lot more bottom on the amp with the 2 Alnicos and 2 Weber Californias. All my amps have new tubes, new caps and are biased at 30-32 ma. You won't get the strong bottom of a Session 400 for sure.

I just went around to all three:

The 1967 has 4 CTS Alnicos, tons of bass and moves the hair on your chest with volume at 4, tone controls at 6.

The 1971 (Blackfaced circuit, has two CTS Alnicos and two Webder California, the same as above

The 1964 has 4 each Mojotone Black Beauties, ceramic. It does not come close the the bottom the other amps have! I have two more CTS Alnicos on hand. I will be loading them in the 1964 ASAP!

Thanks Ken, I took out the sovtek 6L6's and put in some Sylvania's I had with out a huge change but subtle.

The preamp tubes are a combination of tubes, but mostly sovtek if I remember correctly. A friend of mine has a box full of NOS RCA 12ax7. Would it be worth the hassel to swap these out?

BTW, I'm using a LEs Paul with EMG 85's pickups.

Not hard to change out. Sovteks generally sound pretty good, but it is fun to experiment!
