Seems like most lap steelers prefer a tube amp and most pedal steelers prefer a solid state amp. My six string lap with a tele style pickup sounds better through a tube amp but my 10 string console with a True Tone pickup sounds better through a solid state amp.

I would take a guess that it is the weight factor moreso than the sound. A tube amp rated to produce at least 150 watts would be a fairly heavy amp. Since I have been dealing with steel guitar customers, the number one complaint is the weight of a tube amp. It's not that it can't be done, because we could do it very easily, but when the amp reaches a 70-90lb. weight, no one wants to carry it around.

My Fender twin reverb sounds better when I play my Rick bakelite than any other amp I know of. Much better.

No way could the twin ever give me the sound I like on any of my PSG's. For these, I prefer the sound of the NV400. I have heard nothing better. But I have not heard the new Peavey's, so I don't know about them.

Incidently, the inclusion of the "mid and shift" controls is IMO, the greatest single improvement to amplifiers since their inception. Because nothing IMO gives the player as much control on setting a given PSG's timbre.

Bass, mid (standard) and treble controls just don't allow a player to "tailor" the sound like a "mid/shift" control does.

As far as weight, they are ALL much too heavy for me at 72. I have to have someone else lift them; as I do my PSG's.
