| I was wondering what brand of tube pre-amps some are using and what your opinions are on them good or bad. |

| I have a Demeter tube bass pre in my rack along with an Evans. I like the Demeter, but more often than not, I prefer the Evans for steel guitar. |

Is the MB a tube pre-amp??
& also do you remember selling a George-L pickup a couple of years ago to Rick Tyson in Ohio,,,what model was that pick-up if you can remember

Where to begin...
1) older Alembic
2) older Boogie Studio Pre
3) Peavey VMP-2
4) Peavey Rockmaster pre
5) Blue Tube II
They're all tube pre's , and I use them all with pedal steel, and also with other tube gear for electric 6 string guitar and other instruments...I have Solid State gear also ..
Different gear for different colors !!..Jim |

I've used the Hughes& Kettner Bass Master BATT and the Seymour Duncan Guitar Tube preamp both lately. I like the tube sound of both. The Hughes & Kettner has 2 tubes and the Seymour Duncan KTG has three tubes. They both work well with steel, unfortunately they are both no longer in production. You would have to find a used one to get either. They are both built very solid and sturdy. They also run on ac line voltage and you don't have to contend with a wall transformer.

No kidding? Seymour Duncan tube pre-amp? I see SD (combo) amps occasionally at bargain prices. I think they made a 100 watt amp with a single 12" speaker. Never tried one--and I never saw the pre-amp.
I use a TubeWorks Real Tube 2 (aka 9002) pre-amp. It's set up from the factory for what they call a "steel mod." I think this optimizes it for the hotter signal coming from a PSG pickup. You get three sets of 2 tubes: AX-7, AT-7 and AU-7. I prefer the smoother sounding AU-7s though the gain is supposed to be less. A knowledgeable sound tech gave me a helpful hint: turn the volume up all the way on the power amp and keep the level fairly low on the pre-amp. Keeps it very clean with no clip. I use this in a rack rig for larger gigs where I need more volume. Otherwise I prefer the Fender Hot Rod Deluxe. |

| I have been using an ART two-channel mic preamp w/ 12AX7 tubes (originally bought for another purpose) between my volume pedal and LTD 400 amp. Not as much adjustment as some of the other units mentioned, but adds plenty of tube warmth and takes the edge off the transistor sound. |

I use a Tube Works Blue Tube II for a preamp. You can get these with a steel mod. Mine doesn't have it but I don't know how it could sound any better. I have a full Tube Works rack with preamp, spring reverb and MosValve amp. Sounds good to me but then what do I know! BTW, Herby Wallace is a Tube Works man.
