I had the distinct pleasure of meeting/visiting fellow forum-ite Ken Fox at his home yesterday, 140 miles south of Seattle. I had posted my 1969 Fender Super Reverb for sale to buy a smaller tube combo. Ken contacted me about one of his Vibroclones, essentially a Bandmaster Head/Twin Output Tranny, made into a 1x15 combo with Blackface cosmetics. This one is quite beautiful and has a 1960's Altec 15" Speaker. Ken plugged his Sierra U12 into it and wow! Great tone, bright & articulate, but warm/ full bass all at the same time. I have been playing my Marlen into my super and it ws so lacking in Bandwidth in comparison, constricted and mid-rangey.
This amp also works very well for my tele, giving a bit more "Hi-Fi" tone. Every picking nuance really jumps out of the amp.
Ken gave me great Trade-in Deal on my Super, and I can't wait to see his restoration work on it. (It has been gigged heavily, but not abused.)
I had a blast visiting Ken and stayed about two hours longer than I meant to! With the time, care and attention-to-detail that Ken puts into his amps, I feel that I got a bargain!
Also, I made a new pal on the Forum.
Ken also has SERIOUS telecaster chops!

| Hey Grant, does the band master have a tube recifier? I play through a black-face Twin with a Weber California 15" speaker in it. I've heard of his VibroVerb clone, but was affraid that it wouldn't be enough wattage. I also play tele though the same amp and prefer the 15 to the 2-12's. You need to get your band down here to San Diego so we can do a show together! |

Howdy Joe,
Yes it does have a tube rectifier. The Vibroclone is just like a Super Reverb with a much bigger output transformer (off of a twin) into a an altec 15. I play steel in a band that keeps it quiet on stage, so it still can keep up, I hope. It is louder than my super so I am sure that it will do well.
I would love to play in San Diego! I hear that there is a good rockabilly-western swing scene down there. Isn't Deke Dickerson from SD?? |

| Yeah I was afraid that the clone wouldn't keep on on those louder nights... Deke I believe lives in LA, but he does play down here a lot along with Big Sandy and San Diego's own The Paladins. I play steel in a band named Dick Smiley, which unfortunately can get kinda loud. |
