Group,

I decided to torture myself today and try and work out some Jr. Brown lines on my S8 tuned to C6. On the 12 Shades of Brown album, the tune "A Way To Survive" is there any possibility that Jr. has the help of a few pedals and knee levers ??? Or is able to do all of this amazing stuff with bends behind the bar. Either way, he sure sounds terrific. What an amazing talent.

I think he's playing his Emmons on that one.

Try Jerry Byrd's rendition of Last Date on the Admirable Byrd LP. If that doesn't warp your mind, nothing will. Sometimes I wonder if he has a bar with a hinge in it so he can slant both ways at the same time. Kayton Roberts can do the same stuff and no pedals either. Nice music to get C6th (Seasick) by, as Jeff Newman once said.

Regards, Paul

Michael,

I'll sleep better tonite knowing there is an Emmons in his stable (or even a hinged steel).

If it sounds like a pedal steel on Junior's CD's; then it IS. Junior plays the ShoBud pedal steel as well as his Guit-steel on all his CD's.
Junior is a huge Lloyd Green fan(probably the biggest)...and his pedal steel style is very much like Lloyd from the 60's era.
Junior is great at bending strings and slant bar on the non-pedal steel...but you can't do what he did on the pedal steel...on the non-pedal.

Ricky,

Thanks for the info. Those country songs are depressing enough without thinking Junior was doing all of that stuff non-pedal !!!! Now can you tell me if that poor fella ever got home from Cocoanut Island.

Paul is RIGHT! Jerry Byrd does an entire song using three string reverse slants to stright bar positions.....not in C6th, but in his version of the old E7th tuning. Simply amazing!
That's why I've always maintained that it's the bar hand that needs a lot of attention and not just the picking/blocking hand.

Nope the guy never makes it home pal......ha.
I would like to say; Junior Brown is a great pedal steel player; and there is more pedal steel than non-pedal steel on his CD's.
He loves playing the pedal steel but of course does not get a chance at the shows.
My long time best friend; Steve Layne; played bass with Junior from the start(until just recently); but now is back with Gary P. Nunn; which is who we all three(me; Junior; Steve)played with for some time.
Junior used to tell me: "Hey Ricky; I just talked to Lloyd Green again today"; about every other day. Junior would actually play him licks and solos over the phone for his approval. Again; there is not a bigger Lloyd Green fan than Junior(I'm a close 3rd...ha); and it is VERY evident in Juniors' pedal steel style.
