Group,

All of these posts about Dobros finally got under my skin, so I went to the music store and tried out a squareneck. Holy moley, now I've got to have one !!!! I'm probably gonna order the $200 Johnson and add the Quaterman stuff. My question is do I continue to use my Jerry Byrd bullet, or is there some special steel that one uses for Dobro (I'm gonna tune it with a pair of G major triads and play bluegrass).

They'll be a variety of preferences offered here. My preference is the Shubb-Pierce 2.
To me, it's the best of all worlds. It has the Stevens type finger groove, it's a heavy bar, and a semi bullet nose. I find that it is good for slants, good enough for hammer ons and pull offs, and works nicely for mellow playing. Of course, if it's strictly Bluegrass by the book, a Stevens or Stevens type is tough to beat.

I play a BJS bullet myself, but if you're looking for a square-edged bar for those bluegrass pull offs, I'd check out the Scheerhorn. It has a sharper leading edge than most, and is beautifully styled to fit the hand. Expensive, though.

If you're going to play bluegrass, the Scheerhorn type would be the best choice.

Virtually nobody plays bluegrass with a bullet. The loud and clear pulloffs facilitated by the sharp edge of the Scheerhorn type bar have become an important part of today's bluegrass reso sound. The countour of that bar also makes it easy to execuse reverse slants for slower numbers.

Just remember, excessive pulling off can lead to blindness.
