What is the best type of 15" Neodynium speaker for steel guitar? What model is Evans using?

Chances are it's probably made by Eminence.
There's also Jensen & Celestion making
those type of speakers. They're supposed
to be a lot more efficient, with better
frequency response, & alot lighter in weight.
Only thing is....they ain't cheap.

I hope someone tries to make a speaker voiced like a JBL D-130 or a Black Widow 1501-4, with a metal dustcap, but with a Neo' magnet. That would be great to have such a lightweight speaker that will do that sound we like. I understand that the neodymium magnets of equal strength are WAY lighter than ceramic or alnico.

The Celestion "Century-12" that I installed recently is quite light, at about 3 pounds, but it's only rated at 75 watts. If some manufacturer would make these speakers at a higher power rating (say, 200-300 watts), and keep the price below $200, I think they'd sell all they could make.
Most people would gladly pay an extra $50 per speaker to get a lighter one...but probably not an extra $100-$200 per speaker. |

| Again Peavey is one of the only manufacturers making 4 ohm speakers to my knowledge, (I could be way wrong here, I'm getting a recone on a D 140 and JBL does not make a 4 ohm voice coil, had to go with a after market kit) I heard the Neo speakers aren't available in 4 ohm, I'm surprised that 6 string guitarists don't use more of a single 15" speaker |

| I purchased a pair of the Eminence 15" neodymium speakers and like them. Weight was my primary goal- in new cabs that I built the total weight is 20#. The speakers are a bit more "transparent" then my JBL's (which, to my ears added a bit of color) and I'll be playing my 1st gig with them tomorrow so that should be a good test. |

Those Eminence Delta Lite's should handle
the power, but it looks like the frequency
response only goes to 3.5K...a little low.
They should get up to around 5K I would think. |

I put a Deltalite 2515 in my LTD 400 this morning.Played it for a while and I like it.I was concerned about the frequency response as Jay mention but it's bright,snappy and clear as a bell.
I was curious if this stock speaker was the one Evans is currently offering or if they had it modified in some way.I got no response from them but my guess is they use the stock speaker.
Anyway just one mans opinion.The big bonus is the weight of the amp is far more manageable. |
