Does anyone have any experience with one of these, especially for recording?

Also, have any of you tinkerers taken one of these apart? I was wondering if they use both halves of the 12AX7, or just one.

Artie, we use those all the time on recordings. I think they're just great, they add that nice harmonic distortion and definately make the instrument or vocals sound "bigger". Of course you can use them for a crunchy overdrive too if you need to.
