I play an Emmons p/p,B/L 710 pickups,Hilton powered vol pedal,Lexicon MPX 200,Nashville 400 with Lemay mod.
I'm having trouble getting a clean sound,It sounds a little distorted like there is a build up of gain.Looking for the most preferred hookup way with this equiptment & some good amp settings ect,or something i can try.
Thx

Hi Paul. I've always found that when there is a problem start by eliminating the variables. So- start by eliminating the volume pedal and the MPX 200 and go straight from the guitar to the amp and see if the sound is still distorted. If so- try changing cables- if still distorted with a BL pickup lower it more (away from the strings). If it's ok with the volume pedal and effects unit out of the circuit- put the volume pedal back in and see how it is. If that's ok add the mpx in the Nashville effects loop and make sure that you're not overdriving it (turn the input down on the MPX)- I've done that on more than one occasion. In other words- isolate the culprit and then work on that. Hope this helps~ Jim

The BL 710 is a VERY hot pickup with enough ouput to distort some devices. Lower it down as much as possible away from the strings. Bill Lawrence designed that pickup to be used with a passive (pot) pedal. The hot pickup into the Hilton may be part of what you're hearing.

Just a thought,

Brad is soooooo correct.

ANY amplifier EVER built has a maximum input signal it can stand without clipping (distortion). While there is little to no fear of this happening in most cases, when one starts adding ANY piece of equipment that adds "gain" to the signal, there IS a possiblity that one WILL exceed the maximum input level of a given amp.

So, using Brad's analogy sums it up perfectly,

Try adjusting your PV 400 pre and post gain by working them opposite from the recommended settings. I am using the Hilton pedal on loan from a friend with a Mullen D10 thru an Evans FET 500 HV and found at low volume it was distorting like a bad speaker. after working with the pre and post signals in the amp I was able to eliminate any distortion. This may not be your solution but...check it ou...you have nothing to lose.

Brad is correct. Try using the low input of the amp. Preamping a 710 results in a very hot signal. I found using a Hilton with a BL-710 made very little difference in the sound. Thats one of the reasons I don't use one.
