I play a Mullen Universal 12 - This guitar along with others I have had always seem to be hard to get the tone I want. - It seems by the time I get the bass notes cleaned up, my mids and highs are getting a little thin, and when I adjust the highs back to where I want them, the bass gets a little muddy. Anybody else fighting this? - I am still runing the stock pickup and was wondering what others were using. I wish someone made a split pickup?????

I play a U-12 Mullen which came with a George L pickup. It's the 900 series, I believe it's a 912? It's the narrow pickup, color is black, 2 rows of individual string magnets.
Best bet is to call the Lawrence company and talk to them.
You might call Del Mullen and ask him which George L pickup he recommends, too. Don't try email, it takes too long. |

Ron - I just had Jerry Wallace rewind an older Mullen pickup to his TrueTone specs. It sounds great in my Mullen U-12.
Do a search for TrueTone pickups and you can read what others are saying about Jerry's pickups.

Thanx for the input - John, I'm wondering if that isn't a Bill Lawrence pickup in yours - I Could be wrong - but it sounds ike one and I know they are very popular too.
BTW - I live in Iowa and my oldest son lives in Medford - works for a big plumbing and heating contractor. I'ts something like SOHAC?? |

Ron:
My pickup could be a Bill Lawrence, I'm just not familiar enough with all of the brands. I bought my Mullen from Scotty a couple of years ago.
We just moved to Medford last July. I finally retired and this is just one nice place to live. We came from Denver but are native Oregonians.
Its a small world, we live here but our son lives in Nebraska. He used to live in Sioux City, Iowa when he worked for Gateway. Does your son play steel? |

Ron,
Lee has the right idea...I've put Jerry's TrueTones in all of my steels...They balance out the tone and balance the strings to the point where you don't have any offending strings, and you can accomplish what you are trying to do...You will be able to set up your EQ the way you want without any notes becomeing too shrill or other notes becoming too muddy...It's a very balanced pickup ...
Not to mention it's a GREAT sounding pickup. |
