Well... I've been dragging my feet waiting for the newest "next best thing" for way too long. My home studio is built around a Mackie 24 channel 8 buss and three adats.
After much procrastination, I ordered a new digital recorder today. I am an Alesis fan in spite of their bankruptcy and troubles last year. I think they have redeemed themselves. I bought a Masterlink HD mastering cd recorder last year and really think it is an amazing tool. I've been waffling between the Mackie HD and the Alesis HD24 for the last six months.

No more! With the addition of the 96k sampling option and the new firewire hookup for transferring data to your computer, Alesis emerges as the clear choice for me.

I ordered the Alesis HD24 from Sweetwater yesterday. I'm really excited about it as I plan to do a church oriented recording project. I am really fired up about the new Firewire option...The possiblities are endless! Anyone else gone this route?

Congratulations Steve, we upgraded to a Mackie HD24/96 about a year ago, and love it. The ADATS were great in their time, but HD recording is much better. Next, you'll need a digital board to go with it. We use a Mackie D8B.

Darvin...
This was a tough decision for me. I did look at the Mackie D8B, but at nearly 10K$, It was not feasable for a simple home studio.

I started looking at different options without breaking the bank. Since I have a pentium 4 2.4ghz with 120gb HD, a analog Mackie 24x8, and a Masterlink, I wanted to be able to use the existing board.

My plan is as follows: I am going to pick up some audio software. I will do my basic tracks into the HD24 and then dump them
into the computer via the Fireport. I can cut and paste and mess with these digitally before transfering back to the HD24....
Then, I will mix down to the Masterlink using old fashioned fader moves.
I'm hoping for good results!

Steve,
I went a similar route that you did, but finally got away from the computer altogether..I was tired of all the computer conflicts with extensions and what not, and I went with the Akai DPS24...It has it all..I can track, mix, fader automation, effects, and mix down to CD all on one machine..It does 96k digital also !!...It's the whole ball of was all in one machine, and it sounds great !!....Jim
