the above 12" BW's are Kevlar impregnated and designed for vocals/moniters/midrange bass
1203-4's are paper cones and designed for instruments. there the ones for steel.

I just ordered a couple of 1203-4, I sure hope they sound good, because I won't miss hauling around 15's.

I believe Earnest and Chas are looking for the Peavey 12 inch speakers that Jeff Newman told us about on his website. The ones that are used in the 112E speaker boxes. The ones that go "Boom"

Actually, the 1203-4 ohm BW's were what we used in the Nashville 112E cabinets. I used them on several occasions with a DPC 1000 and Profex II and they sounded really good.

According to the PDF file, the 12 inch speaker that corrseponds to the 1501DT is the 1203, not the 1201. The 1501DT and the 1203 are the only two speakers that use paper cones. The others use Kevlar cones. Apparently steel players (abd many guitar players) prefer the sound of the paper cone.
I really like the sound of my 15 inch Black Widow with Gerry Walker's Stereo Steel amp. I have a JBL D130F on one side, so it is easy to compare the two, and the BW sounds much better to me.
The reason I asked about the 12" speaker is that I have a little Yamaha combo amp (G100-112) that sounds great when I use the 15 inch BW instead of its built-in Yamaha
12" speaker. I think this would be a killer recording amp if I find a 12 inch BW that sounds like the 15 inch BW.[This message was edited by Earnest Bovine on 14 June 2002 at 09:26 AM.] |

FWIW, I recently bought a '70 Vibrolux Reverb that had been modified with a 1203-4 BW speaker replacing the stock 2-10's. I really thought this would be a great practice or small gig steel amp, but the BW isn't doing it for me at all.
It has poor low end response and is edgy or brittle sounding on top. I'm not nuts about the sound with my Tele either, not at all what I expected. However, it is really LOUD (efficient). BTW, the VR sounds much better plugged into a small box with a cheap 12" Eminence that I use for a test load on my bench, much warmer. Just a better match for that amp I guess...
BTW, I'm not knocking the 12" BW, I really like the 15" BW, and I'm sure the 12 would be fine in some amps, just didn't work in this particular Vibrolux.

I just put two 12" bw's (1203-4 I think) in my Peavey Stereo Chorus 400. I also added a Lemay mod - man what a nice sound now compared to stock. Just get the right ohm rating you need. -4 , -8
But it is MUCH heavier now. Those BW magnets are not light. So you may notice minimal change in weight.

The reason ther is no bottom in the Vibrolux that has the 12" BW in it is in the voicing of the amp. THe main reason is that the Vibrolux output transformer was designed a bit cheaper than what is used in a Pro reverb/Bassman etc, and is quite a bit smaller/lighter, and has a bit of a bass frequency roll-off. This roll off Fender thought was good, as to protect the teeeeny 10" speakers. There are aftermarket transformers that are quite a bit beefier that can be put in (probably about $100-$150 installed), that will DRASTICALLY increase the beef in this amp.
There are also some voicing thigns that can be done to the tone stack (I currently have my Vibrolux set to 'blackface' specs, but also have the 'normal' channel with reverb and vibrato, and you guessed it, I have it voiced differently than the 'vibrato' channel, with a couple different caps in the tone stack that make this channel MUCH thicker in tone than the stock vib. channel..still wouldnt play PSG with it, not until I can get some 12"speakers in it and the new OT).

| Try replacing all the tone caps with silver mica (250uf) and appropriate sized Orange Drops in the Fender and them check out them BW speakers! I just did that today on my second Vibroverb clone. It sound much like your amp description above. It has total changed now! The frequency response is unbelievable. It is just like replacing a set of old dead strings with new ones! I would have never believed it if I had not done it myself and heard the difference today. |
