If anyone has some custom settings for the Digitech RP-100 that they have come up with, I'd appreciate the shared information. I just haven't got "the sound" that I'm looking for....yet. Thanks in advance for your help.

Bruce,
What kind of amp?
What fx do you need?
Are you using amp modeling?Do you use anything else with it?

I've used one for a couple of years and, for gigs, it's the greatest $100 I ever spent. It does have a bit of hiss that you hear in a quiet room (I would never use it in the studio), but it's not noticeable in a live situation. I use it for all reverb, delay, and other effects. Feel free to drop me an EMail or respond to the questions here and I'll try to help. It's not with me right now, but I'll bring it home tonight and can give you some of the settings if you let me know what you're after.

Try using no amp model, no eq, and start from there. You should get your straight through amp sound that way and can add on as needed.

Thanks for responding Larry. At home I am using a Crate GX40-C 200 watt Amp. In live situations I use a Nashville 1000. I just recently purchased the RP-100 and I am trying to get used to it. Currently I found preset number 37 to my liking. To be honest, I'm not sure of the amp selection. I'm just after a clean, full sound. Years ago I had a Profex II and used Jeff Newmans' presets and would like to get a variety of sounds like I had with that. It seems that alot of the presets are mainly distortion or Wah sounds,(which for the steel, I don't need those). Just looking for a good place to start with customizing the settings. I appreciate your help!

That's really not a fair comparison, Bruce.
The Profex cost 5-6x what the RP-100 does and is a much more full-featured unit. The Profex itself is geared toward steel and the Newman presets tweak it even further.

I would start by ditching all the presets. I didn't find any that sounded right for steel. Learn the basics of how the presets are set up. I would start by turning EVERYTHING off. No EQ, no amp model, no fx, just straight through. Be sure that it sounds ok with nothing. There's no particular reason to use the EQ -- most tone adjustment should be done on the amp. It's not gonna make a Crate sound like a N-1000. You may use either the amp reverb or the RP-100 reverb. I use the RP's reverb and a little delay for my main sound -- through either a mid 70s Session 400 or a 1970 Standel and it sounds great. I start with that preset and use it as the basis for others. For slow songs I have one that adds a bit more verb and delay. I have one that adds a bit of chorus and one that uses the Leslie simulation. I also use one for distortion and one for wah-wah and a few more that are 'novelty' effects that may not be of use to all steel players. I tweak the EQ as needed -- like maybe add a bit of high end to the chorus or take a little off the high end for distortion.

If you're looking to the factory presets for something acceptable, you'll be disappointed. Learn to tweak it yourself. I could give you all the settings I use, but they're different for every guitar/amp combination and would probably be of little use to you.

Hope this helps.
