I am looking for recommendations on a head mounted microphone that I can use to sing through when I am playing steel. Something like Garth Brooks uses. Any recommendations?

Don,
I used a Shure SM-10 for a while. Sounded fine. I had a switch put in the cable so that I could turn if off to cough, etc.
I used this for a couple of months but went back to a mike on a stand because I couldn't work the headset mike (soft, loud,) like I needed to. Since I'm a harmonizer/backup, that was critical.

I've been a lead singer for years. The Shure dynamic is a bit dull. The Audio Technica might be good (their small clip-on mics are). I have to agree with Garth, the Crown 211 is a great sounding headset. That's what I own, and I think it is a great sounding vocal mic. It's pretty comfortable to wear, too. They cost around $200 and come with a belt clip amp that runs off either phantom power or a battery. I haven't tried the AKG, but I know they make good sounding mic's. Garth used them before switching to the Crown mic. |

Hey Don, I use an Audio-technica Pro Series Pro 8HEx. This mike allows me to maintain eye contact with the audience without losing the mike since it is always in front of my mouth.
I can look down to make sure I am playing in the right place and still have control of my voicing. It sure works well for me and have have never had any problems with it. |

I use the Crown 311A (wired) and really like it. It has a belt pack with a totally silent on/off button. The sound quality is great.
You can also buy a slightly different model number, Crown 311 (I think), without the wired belt pack, and make it wireless through a Shure transmitter.
The 311A will should cost you somewhere under $200. The 311 is about the same, but you'll need to add a wireless transmitter and receiver, so I guess your looking at double the cost.
I figured why go wireless on steel --- unless you plan on putting rollers on your steel and seat, and then having someone push you around the stage.
I bought the Crown not because of Garth, but because Janet Jackson uses one too. Just kidding.

I just got a Countryman wired version. Very good sound. Extremely light. Requires phantom power. Has an off switch on the connector.
