I'd like to get a simple percussion sound, background, without buying a drum machine and, as I understand, a PA system to hear it...Is there any simple source to accomplish this? I'm traveling around a lot and don't want to lug any additional baggaqge, more than something simple, and very light weight. If you have any suggestions, they would be appreciated. Regards, jim

Is this just for practice? The only thing i know of with built in speakers are metronomes. Boss and Tama make quality portables. If you want a drum kit sound then you'll have to buy something that requires amplification. A Yamaha RY9, or an old Boss 505, ZOOM makes a new tiny drum machine ($99).

Just a thought, I use my DR-5 with a set of cheap computer speakers when I practice, at times. An older drum machine and computer speakers should be able to be had for under $100.00. I have seen Yamaha drum machines for as little as $40.00 in the pawn shops and small amplified computer speakers can be had for as little as $10.00 a pair.

If you carry a laptop with you anyway, you can use Band-In-A-Box for that.

Its no solution for you...but heres a fun thing I do.

On my godin midi-enabled classical guitar, I layer sounds so each string tiggers not only the notes it plays but also a drum sound. With CHet Atkins style fingerpicking I get some VERY NICE guitar and percussion duets (lets not go into my forays into using midi arpegiators in the drum sounds and making the lowest played string also sound a bass one octave below)

A big advantage is the drums are ALWAYS in time with the guitar.

If someone would only come out with a good midi pickup for steel again....I d love to have one...and Id love to hear Bobbe Seymour doing his fingerpicking with my percussion trick.
