I have seen posts on The Forum, mentioning a Gibson 10 string lap steel. To date I have not seen one nor have I seen a picture of one. Which Model No.? Do they really exist?

Photos on a 30's Gibson HG-150-style ten string model appeared in both Guitar Player & other mags about 10 years ago. So they were an available option as a special order. |

There was a 10 string Gibson Century on eBay recently:

I think Andy meant to type EH-150 rather than HG-150. The EH models were the Electric Hawaiian lap steels. The HG models were the acoustic Hawaiian Guitars. If I remember correctly the Gruhn "Electric Guitars" book has a picture of a 10 string 30's Gibson EH-150. [This message was edited by Gary Anwyl on 16 July 2001 at 02:35 PM.] |

I have a '38 EH-150 10-string with a 'Charlie Christian' pickup, much nicer than Gruhn's. |

You're right, Gary, EH-150 of course! I had a brain cramp. |

Andy...a "brain cramp" at our age is called "a senior moment". |

George I often wake up feeling 75 but I'm chronologically 45. I'll chalk it up to having filled my mental filing cabinet to overflowing. |

Gibson made 10-string versions of a number of models over the years, although they're all comparatively rare. According to the Gruhn guide, there were a total of 90 10-string Centurys shipped between 1948 and 1956. I've seen a 10-string EH-150, and for years here in Toronto there was a 10-string EH-100 hanging in a music store. It drove all the steel players crazy, because the owner refused to sell it, but did nothing to preserve it, either. Eventually the top cracked and bowed so badly the guitar was hardly worth owning. There oughta be a law.
Ten strings is child's play, though, compared to one custom order Gibson did in the 1930's: a 13-string EH-150. It's appeared in a number of the vintage guitar magazines. The neck is massive, and the whole thing has the appearance of a lap steel with a serious thyroid condition. |

I used to have a ten string Gibson; early fifties, black with clear plastic fretboard and tall un-numbered barrel knobs. Had a 'nail hangin' hole in the headstock (not me!). I also used to own the gorgeous sunburst six string EH-150 (with 'stripes' tweed hard case) in Gruhn's Gibson Electrics book. Not one like it; that one! Sold them both to George in harder times.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned that these 10-stringers were produced essentially for those players using the Eddie Alkire tuning. At least they were initially and later, folks extended the regular 8-string tunings they had become accustomed to. For a great deal on a 10-string lap guitar, get yourself one of the E-Harp steels; the originals as well as the 2nd and 3rd generation instruments are all great-sounding guitars and they don't cost much. |

Why does a Gibson six string lap steel have the same EH-150 Model No. as the 10 string lap steel?
Are there any other photos of Gibson 10 string lap steels available.
