12AX7

As far as I know, all "Fender" amps used "AX" tubes in the preamp section,"AU" tubes in the tone amp sections and throughout the years, have used many different output tubes.

If by accident, you put a "AU" in a socket that requires a "AX", there will be NO damage to the amp. Only a possible reduction of volumne (due to the mu of the lower gain characteristics.) The 12AX7 tube is a voltage gain device, the 12AU7 is a current gain device, and the 12AY7 is a mediumn mu device.

To put a "AX" in a "AU" socket, possible a small amount of distortion will be noticed. The pinout of the 12AU,AX,AY,series tubes are all the same.

Thanks guy's, but I probably should have made myself clearer. I know that all three preamp tubes are 12AX7's, what I'm wondering is which of those 3 is the one labeled V2 (what is it's placement on the amp)? It's my understanding that changing that tube to a 12AT7 will soften the overdrive channel without affecting the clean channel.
Thanks, Jeff

I don't know your amp, Jeff, but if it's consistent with other Fender two channel amps then V2 will be the second from the right as you look at the amp from behind (second from the side wall.)

You will need to print it out on an 11 x 17 sheet to be able to read it.
