I am going to be upgradeing from my old 3p/1k Mavrick in the near future and would like your input as to what effects equipment should i consider useing with my older re-tubed 1952 Fender Super-Amp which has twin Jensen 10 Alnico 5 speakers concert series with 2 inst/ 2 mic jks. It was retubed,cleaned,tested and adjusted by a local shop and to our suprise the tonel,volumn and clearity was enough to rock the house. needless to say i am real happy with it. but with the prospects of useing other insterments as my micd Dobro etc etc the effects problem could enter the mix. so if any one has some input i would sure be thankfull and by the way i did try the Line6 Pod but what little experiance i have had in this area is very limited. So if you can please advise. Thanks Bob Coombes |

Bob:
You've got a great old amp. Whatever you do, just don't change anything on the amp itself! Tweed amps maybe need "tweed-era" effects - a Fender reverb unit would sound good, maybe. Or a little digital delay for the "slapback" tape echo sound - like a Danelectro "Dan-Echo". To me the greatest sounds from those tweeds comes from just turning them up and letting them saturate. If the speaker and the cabinet are working together, I don't even miss the reverb.

Bob;
Maybe try and find an old Echoplex. They're pretty cool old units, if you can keep the tape working.

Good question!
When I got my old Standels, I felt it sacrilege to run a digital reverb into it, and thanks to a wonderful Forumite, I got a good deal on a like-new Reissue Fender Reverb Unit. Silky, smooth, and transparent... what a wonderful spring reverb should sound like.
I think an analog delay unit would be a good addition to my/your rig, like the old Electra pedal I have laying around here somewheres.
Those are two types of units I would recommend as compatible with that cool amp of yours. If a Fender reverb is unavailable, Premier made a good one back in the 60's, as did Maestro/Gibson, Standel, and a few others. But you'll pay vintage price for those, while a new Fender unit can be found street price for around 375 buckeroos.

I'm going to be contrary here. I greatly prefer good digital reverbs to the reverb units for everything other than surf music. In terms of an echoplex, you need to try out the Line 6 delay modeler. It has a perfect rendition of either a tube or transistor echoplex. I have owned many of these puppies, and the Line6 sounds better. With a killer old amp like this, I would just leave out the reverb, you don't need it. You will sound better without it, as soon as you get used to playing without. |
