A short time ago a refurbished Sho-Bud volume pedal was offered for sale on BUY & SELL. The owner stated that he had installed a "CLARISTAT" 500k pot in his pedal. Is that a brand name and is it a special high quality pot?

It is a good brand of pot, I use them quite frequently in my work (Marine Navigation and communications). You should be able to get them a an electronics parts store (not at Radio Shack).
I modified my volumne pedal and use a "Helipot" in mine, it's larger that a standard pot and the shaft rides on ball bearings. It hasn't worn out or got "scrathy" in some 15 years. The down side is price!! my current price on these, I use them in gyropilot systems, is 673.00.
The "Claristat" will serve you well.

There is one model Clarostat pot that is used for volume pedals. It is a 500K with a special audio taper and is a sealed Mil Std pot. This particular pot was originally made by Allen Bradley but Clarostat bought them up and it is now put out with the Clarostat name on it.
For years this was the only pot available for (steel guitar) volume pedals. There is now another company making an equivalent pot and the Franklin Guitar Co is selling the alternate vendor's pot. |

Ditto what Jack said. Over the past 10 or 12 years the Clarostat Type J 500K Audio Taper pot has become the standard of the industry. It is the same unit as the old Allen-Bradley Type J that was original equipment in all good brands of volume pedals.

| Bill, Franklin is selling them as replacements. There was one long thread a couple of months ago and the other vendor's version was brought up. Someone said they were using one and couldn't tell any difference. They are made by a company in N.J. I think they are around $12 from Franklin. |
