Our singer is about to buy a pair of P.A.-cabinets for our rehearsal room and for small clubs. I already have a power amp rated 2x250 watts @ 8 ohm.
Neither one of us knows if the power rating of the cabinets is supposed to be higher or lower that the wattage of the power amp.
We asked two dealers and got contradictionary answers.

Think about it and the answer will be clear. If you have a 250 watt amp, you would want the speakers to be rated higher than the amp. You may never run at full power but if someone accidently turned it up to full power and you had less than 250 watt speakers they would blow. Better to be on the safe side.
