Hi group:

A friend of mine bought a used Magnatone looking lap steel on eBay and he's looking for information about string guage sizes for various tunings.

I have an Earnie Ball string guage chart but it's designed for instruments such as the Fender 1000, with a 24" string length.

Is there a chart online that covers lap steels with a 22" string length?

There is a nice steel guitar string gauge chart by John Ely at http://panworld.net/~johnely/learning/gauges.html

He gives a range of gauges for each pitch and sugests using the higher gauges for a 22" scale.

Here is a chart for two tunings I use that I have passed around to my students with a Short Scale(which that one you posted is) Steel.
I hope it helps as I have used so many different guages for many tunings on many steels; and this is a chart that is a happy medium for all.

E13+9 tuning 8-string
(short scale)

G# .012 plain
E .015 plain
C# .018 plain
B .020 plain
G# .024 wound
F# .028 wound
E .032 wound
D .038 wound

C6 tuning 8-string
(short scale)
G .013 plain
E .015 plain
C .018 plain
A .022 plain
G .028 wound
E .032 wound
C .038 wound
A .044 wound

I use and prefer nickle wound

My guide at www.b0b.com/infoedu/gauges.htm is loosely based on the Ernie Ball chart. I wouldn't hesitate to use if for a 22" scale because it is already a bit on the heavy side.

You can order Jagwire strings by the gauge from the Forum catalog. Free shipping!
