Your Opinions, What is the best sound you have heard out of a PreAmp and Processor. Seems like people are Mix Matching everything coming and going. I'v got a Dpc-750, ProFex 11, and a Stereo Steel preamp It sounds great but they say two preamps dont usually work right together. So i'm gonna try a Lxp-1 and a Lxp-5. No matter what the cost what have you guys like the best. For all us that is always searching and never SLEEP. Thanks for the answers!! Gary

Gary,
I can tell you that you ain't the lone ranger. Steel players switch and swap and mix and match more than any other musicians I've ever encountered.

I have two rigs, since I play a lot of small venues like microbreweries and smaller clubs and also have to play fairs and outside gigs from time to time. I wrestled with combo amps for years and ended up with the two best ones I'd tried: a '78 Session 400 and one of the early Session 500s. I removed the chassis and reverb tank from the 400 and had a friend build a cabinet for it -- looks like an old Bassman head.

About four years ago I went to a Mosvalve 500 and a Digitech 2112 through two Peavey 15 cabinets. When I need to honk, that rig will certainly do it. When I need to be quiet, I just take the Session 400 head and one 15 cabinet. I find that the tone I shoot for on the 2112/Mosvalve is what I get out of the Session 400, so that's the benchmark for any amp/preamp combo I would ever use.

The problem with multiple preamps or, for that matter, putting ANYTHING between your guitar and amp, is that each device has a unique tone and many of those devices have their own equalization. Setting the simple array of tone controls on a Session 400 can be difficult in some rooms, but trying to get a multitude of preamps and EQs working together properly to deliver the sound you hear in your head is NOT EASY.

My advice is to eliminate everything you can. Be sure you don't forget how your guitar sounds through a good sounding steel amp -- whether it be Peavey, Webb, Evans, Fender or whatever. THAT'S WHAT YOU SHOULD BE SHOOTING FOR, IMHO. I've found that the more knobs you have to twist the harder it is to home in on the sound you're looking for.

A final thought: It ain't the meat, it's the MOTION. I've heard Buddy Emmons sound great playing through just about any rig you can think of.

Good luck. Hope to see you again in GR in April.
