my semi annual question:
Joe Maize, non pedal player from 50's.
Couple of albums on Decca, one of which "Presenting...Joe Maize and His Cordsmen" is a cool "Lounge" vegas style offering.
Wondering if any forumites may have ever caught his act Live, and or have reminiscences of Joe Maize..
Or any other info you might have on Joe- is he still living/Playing and where; if not when did he pass on.
Stuff like that...

Cool posting. Is this a recent release or reissue? What about the Hot Club of America? Are these available on CD? Jody Carver has surfaced on the forum in the Buy and Sell section with a Music Man amp for sale. Unfortunately I don't have audio on my computer so couldn't play the sample.

Hot Club of America and Joe Maize albums I have are original 50's vintage vinyl found at yard sales... I don't think anyone, even the lounge lizards doing the Esquivel derivatives reissues know about this stuff.
I feel very fortunate to be in contact with Mr Carver.and am so glad he has joined us on the forum. he is one of my steel heroes.
Joe Maize's record makes me dream- what if Sam Butera and the Witnesses had had a Steel Guitar Player...man... I want a friggin time machine so bad |

Yeah Joe Maize. I picked up that same album a couple of years ago at a thrift store. Great stuff. Dave, don't forget to share any new info you get. Good luck |

Dave, have you tried emailing any of the exotica websites and fan pages?
They might not have any pages on Joe Maize, but it could be a case of they haven't got enough info, or haven't been able to hear the albums to be sure.
you might have already tried this avenue of course.

Thanks for the suggestion Jason... most of the ones I've visted have been preoccupied with Esquivel! and Martin Denny...
but I'll do a more thorough search... |

Yeah I know what you mean, but in some cases they're sitting on stuff as they might not have quite enough to post a page or article.
You might get lucky, you might not.

I did a web search and found a lot of references to a bartender in Hawaii who is a world champion sand castle sculptor. Same name: Joe Maize. |

b0b, that's a different guy. I e-mailed him last year and he stated that he's not the mysterious Joe Maize we seek. |

maybe try a genealogy site? |

Well, some word, but not a lot...
however what I have learned is cool:
Jody Carver of Hot Club of America tells me he actually shared a bill at one point in NJ club with Joe Maize back in the 50's!
what I wouldn't give to have had front row seats for that!

Bumping this back up in my semi-annual search...
Jody Carver has had antennae out for any word, but so far to little avail.
so- the questions remain:
Anyone here ever see Joe "LIVE"?
Is he still living?
etc...

I have one of those great Joe Maize and the Cordsmen albums and am very curious if he is still around, and if so, is he still playing at an elder age. FYI: the steel guitarist on those old ESQUIVAL recordings was none other than Alvino Rey. Again, I wonder whatever became of Esquival ?...seems to have dropped out of sight. |

Joe Maize is a mystery that I hope is never solved. I love his music and have wondered about him for a long time too. I think he is really an urban myth, like crocodiles in the sewers and Kentucky fried rat---he never really existed! |

I have "JOE MAIZE & HIS CORDSMEN" - "HAWAIIAN DREAMS" Decca DL-78817 (real stereo).
Liner notes states "Joe and the boys have appeared at many leading hotels and nightclubs in America and the Hawaiian Islands (The Mocombo in Hollywood, The Desert Inn in Las Vegas, The Latin Quarter in New York). They have appeared on their own show and many local TV shows emanating from Salt Lake City, and they have done guest spots on shows suchas Patti Page's."
Joe Maize - steel
Johnny Cassinari - accordion
Chubby Dorin - bass viol'
that's all I got
