I own the Hot Rod Deluxe and I think you won't get a better tube amp for that money. I A/B'd it with a lot of amps while I was shopping and even much more expensive amps couldn't beat the Deluxe. I use it for my steel, too and it sounds great though it's underpowered for live situations.

Thanks Martin. I got a chance to play a Telecaster through it and was very impressed, but hadn't heard a steel through it. I was considering it for a practice/portable amp.

I've used a hot rod deluxe on guitar and steel in studio situations and both sound great loud. It is good live if you have a good monitor situation, or a drummer with brushes.
As with any tube amp, you have to drive it to the point where it gets crispy, but not fried. I particularly like the Fender Vibrasonic live, because it has a 15" speaker and 85 watts tube. It has guitar and steel inputs, but nothing sounds good in the steel inputs. |

I checked out my steel thru a Hot Rod Deluxe.
The tone was fine but, to my ears the reverb
is a bit harsh sounding. In all of those
amps, a small chip drives the reverb section
instead of one the tubes.

I remember thinking that the reverb sounded somewhat brittle with the Telecaster; so I only had a wee pinch of the 'verb on. But I thought the amp's tone was really nice otherwise.

I have a Hot Rod Deluxe and IMO while the amp sounds fine for steel, the Eminence speaker seems to be a bit brittle sounding, not fully rounded in the mids like a D120 or a Black Widow.
For $500 though, it's a nice package - especially for Strat and Tele.
