The factory pick-ups on me Emmons Legrande III seem quite noisy to me. Is this normal? If so how much quieter are humbuckings and what are the disadvantages of switching pick-ups. I like the sound of the Emmons pick-ups but they hum an awful lot. What are your suggestions?

Hey Jim, I had the same problem with my emmons and I ordered a Bill Lawrence 710 pickup . I love the sound & and no noise at all . Give him a call and tell him your setup and he will tell you what what the best pickup to use. The # is 877-647-2651.

Describe the noise.
Does it change when you move the steel guitar?

The hum is about the same all the time. It is not terrible, just a little annoying. I intend to get a new amp in a few months anyway, so if that doesn't make much difference, I might switch to humbuckings. The noise is not really noticable when I'm playing, but I always make sure the volume pedal is up when I'm not playing. If it weren't for the volume pedal it would be a real problem. Come to think of it, maybe part of the problem is in the pedal. I will check that out.

You could use a "noise" gate.
Or get "noise-free" pick-ups.

My Emmons LeGrande III is about 6 months old and has the stock pickups. They are simply noisy but the tone is great. I play though a profex II and a EQ which enhances the tone, but also the noise.

I spoke with the folks at "Emmons" and also several seasoned players. Basically, it's the noise of the single coil pickup vs tone. If you plan on recording, it could be a problem. but live playing seems to be ok.

I've heard good things about the Lawrence pickups and have considered them. If you get them, let me know what you think.
