Listening this morning, Brad Paisley was on, Good guitar player and singing was not bad, not quite as on pitch as his records. Fine steeling, good band, not too much distortion on the guitar. Then Imus said that he grew up on Hank, Haggard, Jones, etc, but now he's sick of them. Hag is p.o.ed because they don't play his records on the radio. Imus said its over, the bus has moved on, get over it.
Progress is good, but if something was good twenty years ago, it may be dated now but it's still good. I want to hear some new stuff, and I want to hear some old stuff too. Imus lost a fan this morning.

In other previous shows he has shown much adulation for George, Merle, Buck and others, while at the same time "putting down" the latest country crass (except for George Strait, Dwight Yoakam and Randy Travis - Paisley, too).
Imus is a walking contradiction. I think the guy is starting to get seriously lame, and maybe experiencing early senility or alzhiemers.
I think his remark about Jones and Haggard was merely stating a fact. Sad but true, those guys are not being played much or promoted. It's just the way he said it, that miffed many.
I saw the whole 3 hours and I liked David Crosby's take on the whole music industry.
Basically David said that when MTV & VH1 came out, he thought that video would help to show and enhance what the "song" was trying to get across. But as he, and the rest of us have come to realize, that backfired.
What video/music spawned were the slew of no-talent good-looking people (mostly women) who can't sing, play an instrument, or even fake it well. Music? What a joke!

Interesting post by Chip, re Imus and his contradictory nature.
I couldn't tell you-I haven't caught the guy too often over the years. I think he comes on around 4 AM out here on the coast.
If I'm not forced to get up that early due to something like having to catch a plane for a business trip-there is only one thing that'll get me up at that time, and that'd be fishing.
Howard-I'm under the assumption that you have been at least a somewhat regular listener/watcher of Imus for some time.
Assuming that's the case, I'll play the devil's advocate here: The guy makes a short statement that you wrote about above, regarding classic country music, and now you're completely done with him?
Strikes me as being pretty harsh!

| When I was a teenager in Cleveland, Ohio, Imus was a dj at a local country station there. I remember the time he played a Dave and Sugar record and when it was done he announced: "That was Dave and the Bimbos". He has always spoke his mind it seems. |

In spite of his NUTTINESS, Imus today, is still a staunch fan and supporter of "traditional"
country. I think so. He wavers. Yes he does.
But he has put some great country artists on his AM show over the past 3-4 years that I've known about him - and all I can say is he has opened up many eyes; including redneck Barnard.
I love the guy.
Hey - at least he tries. And he has the power and resources to do so.

Yeah he's right in that they don't play the classic Hagard and Jones on the radio BUT, you outta see the sold out house when either one of those guys show up for a concert here in East Texas. Older folks, young folks and everything in between. I'd like to see Imess draw a crowd like that.

| Ditto, Don Imus has alway been a supporter of Country Music. Maybe a lot of us don't always agree with his opinions but I have liked his show since the 1010 WINS days.Catch it sometimes on MSNBC. Funny stuff happens. Howard Stern sort of modeled himself after Imus when starting out then just turned raunchy nuts.Imus who always looks like he needs oxygen features the next Governor of Texas Kinky Friedman often. Always a blast. |

My sense is that Haggard is not mad that they are not playing his records--disappointed certainly-- but is mad about what as displaced his music from the commercial airwaves. I think he's mad about the sad state of country music. I know I am. I mean the fact that you guys are listening to Imus instead of a country station says it all.

Ron Page: I agree 100%. As a matter of fact, I recall George Jones doing an interview with Merle on the show George used to have on TNN. George started getting on his soap box about not getting airplay and Hag told him if they never played himself or George on the radio again that they shouldn't complain -- they had been very fortunate. That's not an exact quote, but close. I was suprised it didn't get edited out, but I was impressed and proud of Hag for takin' the "higher road". I don't imagine much has changed.
Getting back "on topic", I've never heard or seen Imus. I have always heard good things about his support of country music from friends that do keep up with him.

Actually, the most common way to catch the Imus radio show these days--outside of NYC-- is to tune in MSNBC on cable in the mornings. Here's his web page on MSNBC.com
His show is more of a talk format than music. He's usually got something interesting to say whether you agree with him or not. I think he tries to be a bit provocative.

Try www.WFAN.com streaming radio. Imus is on Monday - Friday 6:00-9:00AM [EST] on MSNBC (TV).
He usually has some musical entity on, and/or some other kind of artist.
Bob Barrett and a couple other characters on the show do hilarious impersonations of "pop" people, like Bill Clinton, Dr Phil, Rush Limbaugh, Jerry Falwal etc.
