'Coupl'a nights ago I heard a strange kind of whirrring sound outside my window. I went to look and the was a flying saucer hovering outside my practice room. All of a sudden a blinding beam of light pierced the window to the practice room. I ran to the room only to find my Emmons D10 gone!!! I was in shock and deeply saddened that someone or something had obsconded with my steel guitar.

A few days later, in the middle of the night, there was, once again, a whirrring sound outside my window. I went to look and the flying saucer was back. Again, there was a blinding beam of light sent through the window to my practice room.

I raced to the practice room to see what the aliens stole this time. Instead, I found they returned my Emmons, but look what they done to it!!!

It looks like a bowed psaltery to me.

It's actually something called a pianolin. Marxolin is to pianolin what Dobro is to resophonic guitars.

The only recordings I know of that feature a pianolin are by Wisconsinite Claudia Schmidt. A good example can be heard on the song "Whale Song/Farewell To Tarwathie" from her self-titled CD.

I've heard/seen Claudia perform live on her pianolin and the best way I can describe the sound is "ghostly and violin like"; very eithereal. It's played with a bow. Here's a link to a description with some pics:
