The lovely Ms. Kim Love, a great lap steel guitarist from the Church of the Living God, Jewell Dominion in Philadelphia, gets my vote.
Kim has been confirmed for Friday only at the Sacred Steel Convention.
She's a consumate African-American gospel musician who excels on 8-string lap--usually with heavy doses of a giant Morley wah pedal--as well as standard guitar. Kim comes from a family of fine musicians that includes her brother Ronnie Mozee, who you might remember from his tasty stratocaster fingerpicking on Sonny Treadway's recordings. But guitar is really his second instrument. Ronnie is best known as the top-ranking steel player in the Jewell Dominion.
Will Ronnie show at the convention? Will Sonny show? At this point we aren't sure. But if they do, you can bet we'll make room for them on the program.

There were two women steelers at the Sacred Steel Convention: Lisa Lang of Miami, FL and Maurice Bradley of Rochester, NY. Ms. Bradley didn't play on stage, but was the deserving recipient of a nice custom 10-string lap steel awarded by the Sacred Steel Instrument Fund. Lisa and her group played an outstanding showcase. Lisa has only been playing steel for 5 years, but is an experienced keyboard player who really knows her music. She was fantastic! Next year she plans to bring an all girl band. Not to be missed.
Kim was unable to attend due to circumstances beyond her control but her fellow church member Reggie "Footie" Covington did and blew us all away with some great Jewell Dominion music.
Meanwhile, I'm hoping to get Lisa's group along with some other FL sacred steelers to showcase at the Folk Alliance Conference Feb 2002 in Jacksonville. Calvin Cooke is already booked as a special guest.
Phyliss Barney, Executive Director of the Folk Alliance is totally hooked on sacred steel and attended the SS Conv. in Sanford as part of her vacation. Stay tuned for future details. |

| As I write this, I'm listening to the brand new Sacred Steel album, "Train Don't Leave Me," recorded at last year's convention. As if I didn't feel bad enough already about missing out on the good times in Orlando this past weekend! An utterly stunning album, I think my favorite of all the Sacred Steel collections to date. Thanks again for all your great work getting this amazing music out to the world, Bob. Lisa Lang played with such great heartfelt emotion and lovely intonation. I look forward to hearing her next year.

Ian, I hate to tell you but in the words of Dan Tyack, "this year's convention was exponentially better." Hard to believe, even for those of us who were there. An amazing experience.
Later this week I will pick up listening copies of stereo DATs (we recorded the whole thing on 16-track digital Tascam D88s, like last year). Lisa Lang, Footie Covington, Ray Ray Holloman (age 16) and Josh Taylor will be among the first I listen to.

Be sure to bring plenty of Hawaiian shirts when you come down next year--expect highs near 80F.
The 2001 convention CD should move much more quickly through the production process than last year's did. The Arhoolie 40th Anniv. box set (5 CDs,120 page booklet) was a major work load increase for the label's 5 person staff, so everything elsewent on the back burner for a few months.
By the way, the House of God folks really enjoyed Dick Sanft. They were fascinated to actually see and hear the Hawaiian connection to their music. Aloha and amen. |
