i recently met this fine gentleman/forum memeber at a birthday party for coltrane/garzone where george garzone played and mike layed an amazing cd of his own playing on me. i only hope he offers this excellent effort to the rest of yous guys because it is currently my favorite jazz guitar cd to date. i never realized the connection between peter and the wolf and casper the friendly ghost before this cd

1.) There's a Small Hotel
2.) Paper Moon
3.) Tenderly
4.) So Danco Samba
5.)Three Little Words
6.) Mr Sandman
7.) Crazy she calls me
8.) My old flame
9.) I'm just a lucky so and so
from mike
quote:

The players are myself and Joe Cohn on guitars. I am the first
soloist on all the tracks and Joe is the second guitar soloist.
Larry Goldings on Hammond B3 organ and piano, Duffy Jackson-drums
and Dennis Irwin (the guy we heard on bass last night) was
the bassist.I am the guitarist on "Tenderly" and Joe is the guitarist
on "Crazy she calls me". Also I am the only guitar on "Paper Moon"
and Joe is the only guitar on the last track "I'm just a lucky so and so" which is
a Duke Ellington tune as you already know I'm sure.

with this kind of talent dipping into the steel guitar look out! im not an expert but this dude has shades of buddy fite to my ear. and joe kicks a also.

Mike you had Dennis for your recording bassplayer..
WAY COOL.
I love his playing.

I did a Dvorak IV symphony (New World) with
the Riverside Orchestra,
and Dennis come in at the last minute
and SIGHT READ it....

After that we became loose friends,
and I used to
finish symphony rehearsals and red train
down to the Village Vanguard for his
big band gig there.
The old Mel Lewis Thad Jones Band
that did the Odd Couple theme in an earlier incarnation.

Great music!!

Hi David, Dennis and I are old good friends.
He is one of the great bassists today as you know and also the funniest person I ever met. He also plays clarinet and sometimes plays it in symphony orchestras for his own amusement. He's still at the Vanguard every Monday night.

YOWZA! I just finished listening to this CD and all I can say is 'YOWZA'! Man! Y'all just think Mike is the clown sittin' next to the guy in the gorilla suit? WRONG! Mike is one MONSTROPHILOUS jazz guitarist! Sheesh! I don't know that I've ever heard better playing from anyone. What are you doing the rest of your life?!

Jeez, I gotta get me a copy too.

Mike you do paypal?

Say hi to Dennis for me.
I played the Dvorak on a blonde Kay,
with painted initials on it,
back in '94 with him. Loraine Fox was conducting.

But it's been 10 years in europe
and now Asia since I have seen him last.

Yeah funny man and super player.

Another of my favorite lesser known
NYC players is Cameron Brown.

Whyzzat? Your management won't let you send out anymore until after you play Madison Square Garden? Good grief, you oughta be on a serious jazz label with this CD and playin' for major crowds for major money. I can't think of a thing that I would want to hear differently from what you've done there already. We need to start sayin' that we knew you when...
