Folks, as an addendum to my post on old vs new , I was wanting to launch a topic on what everyone's dream instrument was. Then I realised, in our specialised field, there isn't really such a thing. We are lucky enough to, at a push, be able to afford virtually anything we want. Compare: a Fender stringmaster in superb condition would be under $1,000 ... imagine if you wanted a 50s strat! Or a 50s Gibson steel with almost the same hardware and wood as a $50,000+ flying V for the price of an average new guitar.

At the top end, I suppose a vintage roundneck tricone is out is out of most people's pockets, but a squareneck is still pretty affordable for a professional instrument. Weissenborn's are still a little steep, though.

I still wish I had a vintage resonator, but at my skill level, that's a luxury rather than neccessity, and when I do need one, a great example would be far more affordable than a 62 Les Paul.

Still, what is your dream instrument, whether you own it or not?

Cheers

AC

Good point, Ally. I just acquired a '56 D8 Stringmaster for about 1/10 the price of what a '56 Tele or Strat would have sold for. Vintage steel guitars (pedal and non-pedal) are a relative bargain. Of course, I would still like to see them cost less!

And about that steel-versus-six-string price discrepancy... http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1416375103

Yeah, Mark, like you wrote in your other post, let's all be glad Jimi didn't play a Stringmaster!

I just played some stunningly beautiful resonator guitars at the TSGA show. They are made by Benoit guitars. These have to be seen to be believed. The sound is full and gorgeous. www.benoitguitars.com
