I have that very same picture hanging in my music room autographed by Mr. Don Helms! As a matter of fact, if you see Mr. Don at a steel show, he sells this picture and will gladly autograph it. It was an HONOR to meet him, hear him play and hear his stories about Hank and The Drifting Cowboys.

I think Marty Stuart now owns that old Martin.
Not to be picky about it, but that's a picture of Hank Williams NOT Hank SR.
One of my peeves is when folks call him "Hank SR." because there was no "Hank SR." when Hank Williams was alive. Hank JR and Hank III are just stage names, they are not actually named after their father.
For me there will only ever be one Hank Williams- no SR,JR,III or anything else, just HANK(unles you want to call him be his real name Hiram "Hank" Williams).[This message was edited by Alvin Blaine on 03 July 2006 at 10:55 PM.] |

I think it might be Neil Young that owns that old Martin, and he got it some 30 years ago from flat picking dobro king Tut Taylor.

Mark could be right about this...I have heard this story before...dont really know myself.
OK, here is one LAST pic....BTW Alvin, you are right. There IS only one HANK Williams! and thats all that there will ever be!
..notice in the article where it says " the 37 yr old Williams"....just goes to show.....

| Seems like I remember hearing that Neil Young did have one of Hank's old guitars. The one Marty has is Hank's Martin guitar he got from Johnny Cash, who got it from Bocephus. |

Wish i could remember the year.Around 1950 or 51.Hank Williams was playing in Wichita Falls at the auditorium where the sound was out of sight.At that time i think 45rpm records were just starting to come out.Hank was at Norsworthy music store that afternoon.I talked to him and he gave me a picture of himself and i asked if he would autograph it for me.He said "why shore".
That night he said he had a new song coming out and he hoped people liked it or he was going to go hungry next month. It was Cold Cold Heart.Strange i can even remember most of the songs he sang and the jokes he told.
I saw him there 2 different times but don't remember if this was the first or second time i saw him there.
What blew me away was there was no compairson to the sound in that auditorium and the old 78 and 45 rpm records.He and his band sounded great.Was no way to capture that sound on records back in those days.
I was 16 or 17 years old.
Any one recall the exact year Cold Cold Heart was released? This was before 1952 as i was in Ca.by then.Tracy

| On a DVD about Hank Williams, I believe it was Don Helms who mentioned the fact that Hank Williams usually didn't play a very expensive guitar because, as a result of the rough honky-tonks they were playing, his guitar was oft times busted over the head of one of the patrons. |

Nice time line article.
1931-Hank's family moves to Georgiana, Alabama-Hank gets first guitar-goes to Shape-note singing school in Avant, Alabama.
He probably would have made it himself but it is nice when the family cares at an early age. I have often wished I would have helped my children earlier. My eldest daughter took singing lessons in her 20s and sings in church. My second daughter has a beautiful voice but won't do anything with it. I wish she would.

It was released on Feb 3, 1951. At the time,
Hank had reached the ripe old age of 28 years old. He was gone less than two years later.

Thanks Kenny.You nailed it for me.I was thinkig 1950 or 1951.So it must have been the last part of 1950 when he sang cold cold heart and said it was comimng out next month or so.

| BTW.As i mentioned earlier Hank and his band sounded so great in that big auditorium.This was back when musicians didn't need sound men to screw it up for them. The bands used their ears.LOL.Tracy |

| Thought ya'll might want to know, last year Mr. Don Helms put out a book,"Settin' The Woods on Fire". It's Don's behind the scenes memories of Hank, the band, on the road, personal lives and lots more. Don sells the book and it's hard to put it down when you start reading it. Always been a Hank fan this bood tells info I've never seen before. So if you're interested in memories of Hank it's would be worth your time to get a hold of Uncle Don and have him autograph and mail you one. And all the above pictures and more are in there. I along with lots of others hope this is Vol.1 of many to come.Just thought you might want to know.---Kenny |

As Kenny just wrote...Don has a very interesting book out..$20 American....as Don was out of town I left money with Smiley who bought it from Don..got him to autograph it and sent it to me...Smileys name is in the book..so is mine and an awful lot of others on this forum..all classed as friends.....so get in touch with Don fellas and get one!!
