Topic: Who arranged the Trio album? |

| Does anyone know who did the arrangements for the Trio album? I was listening carefully last night and it suddenly occured to me why I like the album so much (besides, of course, the strong material and stunning vocal performances). Whoever did the arrangements took the concept of less is more and applied it with fantastic results. I guess I may have a bias because I just never cared for the whole Phil Spector "wall of sound" deal, that tends to just seem noisy and cluttered to me. |

I'm guessing that George Massenburg had a hand in developing the arrangements since he was the producer for that album. I would also bet that John Starling (of The Seldom Scene fame) and a good friend of both Emmy and Linda was involved. I know that he has credits on both albums as well as produced at least one track on the second volume (a song he wrote; "He Rode All the Way To Texas").
I just pulled out my disc, "Johsua, Judges and Ruth" by Lyle Lovett, which was produced by George Massenburg - Which is an absolute masterpiece of the "less is more" production style... IMHO of course. Just listen to "North Dakota" or "Baltimore" and you'll be able to hear how well he weaves sparse intrumentation around the lyrics of a song to create art rather than music.
If you look at his catologue on Allmusic, you can see a vast body of work crossing many genres. He has many gems to his credit. Incidentally, after looking at his catalogue, you'll see that there are ties with John Starling back early in his career.

I think Linda & Emmy Lou probably had a good amount of input, also with the caliber of the players they had on the project the song arrangements probably just fell together quite easily. Emmy Lou's Roses in the Snow album was always one of my favorites, her version of Wayfaring Stranger gives me chills....
Interesting trivia about the sequel to the trio album..... I read an interview Linda Rondstadt gave about how upset she and Emmy Lou were with Dolly's involvement, mainly her non-committment to promote the album..... |

I'm pretty sure that John Starling did have a big hand in the arrangements on that album. I remember hearing that he was sort of "musical director" for those sessions...
How is he credited? I don't have a copy or I'd look...

Pete,
John Starling is listed as Musical Consultant. Also: he played acoustic guitar on 'Hobo's Meditation' and 'Those Memories of You', and is listed as co-arranger (with Emmylou) on 'Farther Along'.
